HS Tennis Roundup: North, South girls start strong, HB boys win again

It wasn’t exactly great tennis weather on Wednesday with cool temps, but still very doable in the sunshine as the local high school tennis teams opened up their seasons on Wednesday, with big wins for the Nashua North and South girls and a clutch victory by the Souhegan girls.
And in boys, South got a good road win while Hollis Brookline and Alvirne, who opened indoors on Monday, both won outdoor matches.
Here’s the rundown:
GIRLS TENNIS
NASHUA NORTH 8, WINDHAM 1
The Titans took care of business right away, sweeping singles with wins in ladder order by No.1 Mary Pappas (8-3), Brielle Baxter (8-5), Leena Srinivas (8-3), Mariana Cajigas (8-3), Gabi Desjardins (8-1) and Yelin Kim (8-4).
Pappas/Emily Deandrea (8-3) at No.1 and Desjardins/Wyatt (8-2) at No. 3 also won for North, which is at Spaulding today.
NASHUA SOUTH 6, KEENE 3
The host Panthers took theirru season opener, winning the last four singles matches plus two of three doubles.
Singles winners, from No. 3 through 6, were Saanvi Praturu (8-3), Hannah Jacob (8-5), Gowri Akkineni (8-4) and Riya Shroff (8-1). Doubles winners were No. 2 Jacob/Krina Dani (8-5) and No. 3 Akkineni/Shroff (8-3)
DERRYFIELD 8, BISHOP GUERTIN 1
There were still signs of encouragement for the Cards despite the loss. Nantania Fernandez captured BG’s lone win at No. 6 singles, 9-8 (7-5). Lydia Miller played a long, close match at No. 4 before falling 8-5.
BG has its home opener vs. Bedford on Friday.
SOUHEGAN 5, PORTSMOUTH 4
It certainly wasn’t a soft opener for the Sabers, who after splitting singles took Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to pull out the win.
Callie Perrin/Ori Dart won at No. 1 8-1 and Tess Jancar/Caroline Drum at No. 2 prevailed 8-4 to give the Sabers the match.
Souhegan singles winners were Perrin 8-1 at No.1, Dart 8-4 at No. 3 and Drum 8-1 at No. 4.
Souhegan is at Pembroke on Friday.
HOLLIS BROOKINE 9, CONVAL 0
The Cavs made it a clean sweep in their opener at Longfellow in Nashua, with singles wins by Anuha Chilakapati (8-3), Anna Heiplik (8-4), Ava Porto (8-6), Max Walsh (8-1), Madeline Barich (8-5) and Brynn Spencer (8-4). In doubles, Chilakapati/Porto (8-6, rally from down 5-2), Heiplik/Walsh (8-1) and Barich/Spencer (8-2) finished the sweep. HB is at Timberlane on Friday.
BOYS TENNIS
NASHUA SOUTH 7, KEENE 2
The Panthers had a great start to the season at Keene, wrapping things up with five singles wins by Shrey Shah (8-3), Yuvan Balagurumoorthy (8-0), Nikhil Shokeen (8-4), Raghav Buddhineni (8-1) and Jerry Primo (8-5).
Shah/Balagurumoorthy (8-6) and Buddhineni/Vihaan Shah (8-6) won in doubles. South has its home opener Friday vs. Manchester Memorial.
DERRYFIELD 9, BISHOP GUERTIN 0
The Cards had a rough opener vs. the powerful Cougars, with the closest matches being Jack Kostansek’s 8-4 loss at No. 1 singles and Maxx Lizotte/Charlie Dabrowski bowing 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. BG is at Bedford on Friday.
ALVIRNE 7, MILFORD 2
The Broncos got their first win of the season taking four of six singles and sweeping doubles.
Alvirne singles winners were No. 1 Sam Hergenhahn (8-2), No. 2 Sean Mendes (8-4), No. 3 Owen Suprenant (8-1) and No. 6 Christian Figueiredo (8-1).
Hergenhahn/Suprenant (8-3), Cole Fitzpatrick/Mendes (8-4) and Samaryu Kudikala/Figueiredo (8-6) all won, the latter rallying from being 5-2 down. Kudikala had three aces and a return error to close it out.
Milford’s wins were by Javier Goodwin at No. 4 singles and Marcus Kern at No. 5, both 8-4.
Alvirne (1-1) is at Merrimack on Friday while Milford hosts Bow at Wilton-Lyndeborough HS.
HOLLIS BROOKINE 7, CONVAL 0
The Cavs had another easy match – they have yet to lose an individual match in two competitions to start the season.
Winners from the top of the singles ladder on down, all by 8-0 scores, were Arjun Inakollu, John Torpey, Greyson McSeveney, Sam Anthony, and Dylan Legrow. No No.6 match was played as host ConVal was shorthanded.
Inakollu/Anthony (8-2) and Torpey/McSeveney (8-0) won in doubles. The Cavs host Lebanon in a rematch of last year’s semis on Friday at Longfellow Tennis in Nashua.
PORTSMOUTH 7, SOUHEGAN 2
The visiting Sabers managed only a singles win by No. 3 Patrick Bryson (8-4) and a win at No. 1 doubles 9-7 by Brian Goddard/Balthazar Glover.
Souhegan hosts Oyster River on Friday.
