HS Roundup: Locals shine in NE wrestling, gymnastics

High school competition in some sports shifted from in-state to regional competition over the weekend.
Several local high school boys and girls wrestlers competed in the New England championships this past weekend, and Hollis Brookline’s Caden Bruseo and Alvirne’s Jillian Boncore led the way.
Also, Nashua South gymnast Katie Perry competed in the New Englands in Milford, Conn.
WRESTLING
Bruseo ended up in fifth place in the 138 pound weight class, getting a 9-8 decision over Andover, Mass.) wrestler Jason Ballou. It was his second win over Ballou as he pinned him earlier in the tournament.
Bruseo also pinned Killingly’s Brady Zadora. He suffered two losses, to Mount Anthony’s Asa Reis (7-4) and East Providence’s Charles Phillips.
Jacob Critchfield (157) and Victor Lomme (113) also competed for the Cavs but did not place. Critchfield won one of three, a 5-4 decision over Londonderry’s Manny Perez, while Lomme went 0-2. HB was in a three-way tie for 45th overall as a team.
Logan Allaire wrestled for Campbell at 175, winning three of five matches but failed to place.
Alvirne had Shawn Boudreau at 215 and Shayne Mackey at 165, but neither placed. Boudreau went 2-2 while Mackey fell twice.
Nashua South’s Ben Byrne won one of three, besting Saint John’s Prep’s Will Lavallee in a 3-1 decision.
Souhegan’s Jack Kaler at 126 pounds won one of three, besting East Providence’s Aydin Schifino 19-8 for his lone win.
GIRLS NEW ENGLANDS
Alvirne’s Jillian Boncore finished sixth at 165 pounds, going 3-3. Her wins were a pin of Greater Lawrence’s Jordyn Reynolds, a 4-2 decision over Vergennes’ Caeleigh White, and a pin of Maine Central Institute’s Izzy Bertocchi.
Souhegan’s Isabelle Brandt went 2-2 at 145 pounds. She beat Nokomis’ Hannah Brewer 4-0 and pinned Windor’s Jasmine Williams. Bishop Guertin’s Ayla Saeturn went 0-2 at 165, as did Merrimack’s Avery Beardinelli at 120. Milford’s Mya Coombs went 0-2 at 185.

GYMNASTICS
PERRY DOES WELL AT NE’S
Perry, an individual event qualifier on floor, received an 8.25 out of maximum possible start value score of 9.4.
A different scoring system than is used in New Hampshire, the NFHS Federation Scoring system, was used.
Perry was also the Division I diving champion in swimming.
