The good news is the Division I boys and girls basketball tournament pairings are out with plenty of local teams involved.
The bad news is they all have to wait a bit to get going.
Division I teams wrapped up their regular seasons on Tuesday, with no second game this week. That is likely due to the fact it’s school vacation week.
The Division I girls tournament won’t begin with the preliminary round until Monday evening, while the boys have to wait until Wednesday. There is only one team in the top four, that being No. 4 boys seed Nashua South.
Here’s a look at where and when the locals will play:
DIVISION I BOYS BASKETBALL
Nashua South (14-4) will host No. 13 Merrimack (8-10) next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Belanger Gym. South beat the Tomahawks 68-54 earlier in the season.
The next highest seeded teams are No. 7 Alvirne and No. 8 Bishop Guertin, and both will get home games. The Broncos (13-5) will host No. 10 Manchester Memorial (10-8) next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The two met to open the season over two months ago with Alvirne coming out on top 59-45.
Bishop Guertin (10-8) hosts No. 9 Windham (10-8). The two teams did not meet in the regular season.
Looking Ahead: The South-Merrimack winner gets the winner of No. 5 Exeter vs. No. 12 Goffstown in the quarterfinals; South would host but Merrimack would be on the road.
Alvirne with a win could end up meeting No. 2 Portsmouth on the seacoast for the second time; the Broncos lost 39-38 at Portsmouth in early January. Bishop Guertin, should it win, would have to deal with No. 1 Bedford (15-3) which has a first round bye, in the quarterfinals. The Cards gave the Bulldogs a tough game in December just before the holidays as it was a one-point game early in the fourth quarter before Bedford pulled away for a 67-65 win.
Trinity (No. 3, 14-4) is the third seed and faces No. 14 Winnacunnet (7-11) in the first round. If Alvirne keeps winning, the Broncos could see the Pioneers down the road in the semis. South, of course, could be on a semifinal collision course with Bedford. And those semis will be at the Rochester Recreation Center on Wednesday, March 12 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
The finals are at UNH’s Lundholm Gym at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 16.
DIVISION I GIRLS BASKETBALL
There are no girls teams that finished in the top four (Bedford, Londonderry, Windham and Concord Christian in that order), as the Cardinals of Bishop Guertin finished as the No. 5 seed. They were tied with CC at 14-4 but Guertin received fewer points and thus a lower rating, most likely due to the beating Mercy of Connecticut, which has a small enrollment and not considered a Division I school.
BG on Monday evening will host No. 12 Portsmouth (9-9) in the first round and the two did not meet during the regular season.
The other three locals that qualified will be on the road. No. 10 Alvirne (10-8) is at No. 7 Salem (12-6); the two did not play during the regular season. The winner might get No. 2 Londonderry (17-1) in the quarters on the road; the Lancers will host No. 15 Nashua South (8-10) in the prelims. North and South have the toughest matchups; South fell to Londonderry 65-28 back in mid-January. The No. 14 Titans (8-10), meanwhile, will visit No. 3 Windham on Monday;North lost to Windham 68-31 just a week ago.
So who has the best chance to advance to the semis, which will be at Exeter High School on Monday, March 10 at 6 and 8 p.m.? Right now it looks like BG, but they’d have to get by Portsmouth and then win a potential road quarterfinal at Concord Christian. They beat the Kingsmen 38-36 to open the season.
The finals are at UNH’s Lundholm Gym on Saturday, March 15 at 4 p.m.
