IT’S IN THE CARDS: BG hockey rolls to eighth straight win

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. -Is it in the Cards?
Wow, it sure looks that way, doesn’t it? The ‘it’ being the Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team being perhaps a favorite, or one of the favorites, to win the Division I boys hockey championship.
Remember when they didn’t look in the same class with Concord here during a 6-1 loss back on Jan. 18? Well, that seems light years ago as the Cards haven’t lost since, winning their eighth straight Wednesday night, 5-0 over Bow at Skate 3 Arena.
Also remember that streak includes a 2-1 OT win over the Tide in the rematch up at Everett Arena.
“That loss really turned our season around,” Guertin’s leading goal scorer, Noah Cordiero said. “We switched up the lines a little bit, started scoring a lot more goals. Just get the puck to the net and we started playing a lot more physical.”
“We’re starting to come together,” Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. “We’ve got our two top lines playing a lot, and we’ve got three and four fighting it out for ice time. Everybody’s playing. Nobody’s not playing. … They’re getting plenty of ice time, we’ve got great practices, everybody’s competing.”
And they Cards aren’t slipping against teams they know they can beat. They grabbed a 2-0 first period lead against the Falcons (5-8-2) and never really looked back.
You take a look at a Guertin scoresheet during this stretch and there’s a plethora of uniform numbers on it, showing the Cards’ depth. Last night was no exception as they had five different goal scorers.
Jordan Delude and Ryan Mogielnicki got the two first period goals while James Mantone made it a 3-0 game with a shorthanded breakaway goal 2:13 into the second. The Cards got third period goals by Noah Cordiero and Gavin Santos.
Cordiero ended up with two assists, while Bradyn MacLean led BG with three. Santos had another.
“They tied Hanover, they beat Pinkerton, they’ve beaten Trintiy, they’ve beaten some teams,” Bishop said of the Falcons, who were without arguably their best player, Owen Webber, out with a shoulder injury.
The Falcons had a chance to get back into it in the second period as Guertin’s Cam Miller took a five minute major boarding penalty and Cordiero got called for cross checking that gave the Falcons a 5-on-3 for two of those five. But goalie Conor Hayes (15 saves) was up to the task and the Cards killed it all off.
“We’re rotating goaltenders and they’re both playing well,” Bishop said. “(Luke) Bettencourt beat Concord and Hayes just got a shutout. And he shut out Bedford.”
Could Bishop have believed that this has happened since that Concord loss?
“Yes, because back then we didn’t know the goaltender situation,” he said. “Now we’re rotating them and they’re both playing well.”
After that game, Bishop gathered his team and told them “We need nine top forwards. We know who the top six are, now we need three more. You figure it out.”
They did, and the Cards look like they could be playing on the final day. Or make it difficult for anyone to try and stop them.
