HS Roundup: Cougars advance; big wins for BG, HB boys

Tuesday was a night of big wins for some local high school basketball teams, but none was bigger than the No. 4 Campbell Cougars escaping near disaster vs. No. 13 Hopkinton in the Division III prelims in Litchfield.

Also, the Bishop Guertin boys knocked off Keene at the Colligadome, and the Hollis Brookline boys did what they’ve been doing since Jan. 21: Win.

Here’s a look at last night’s boys and girls hoop adventures. In girls hoop, Merrimack snapped its 12-game drought:

DIVISION III PRELIMS

NO. 4 CAMPBELL 52, NO. 13 HOPKINTON 48

Logan Rice collected 18 points including four three-pointers and 10 rebounds in the Cougars nail biting win. Jack Breton (11 points, eight rebounds), Cayden DeLeon (nine points, eight assists, four steals) and Matthew Haley (eight points) added to the much needed offense.

Campbell hosts No. 5 St. Thomas on Friday in the quarterfinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 73, KEENE 63

Connor McGowan drops 31 points on the Black Birds to lead the Cardinals (8-8) with a big win. Luca Fabrizio and Matt Chau scored eight and seven points respectively. BG visits Timberlane on Friday.

LONDONDERRY 58, NASHUA NORTH 44

The Titans (4-12) drop their second game in a row on Tuesday. Robinson Rodriguez scored 12 points while Alize Roig-Cortes and Braydon Labrecque each had eight. North visits Windham on Friday.

MERRIMACK 59, PINKERTON 49

The Tomahawks (8-8) get a much needed win by defeating the Astros. Ryan Elliott led the offense with 13 points, while Noah Morrison and Mikey Flerra (first game back from injury) collected 11 points apiece. Merrimack has held their opponents under 50 points in three of their last four games. Merrimack visits Manchester Memorial on Friday.

ALVIRNE 67, DOVER 49

Sammy DeWitt’s 19 points led the way for the Broncos (11-5) in their win on the road. Adding to the offense were Garrett Hall (14 points), Sean Chipfunde (nine points), Evan Bettencourt (eight points) and Andrew Deely (eight points). Alvirne hosts Winnacunnet on Friday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 65, LEBANON 30

The Cavs (13-3 Division II, 14-4 overall) held a 36-16 lead at the half and kept their foot on the pedal for their eighth straight win. Colin Magnuszewski led the locals on the defensive side of the court.

HB hosts Merrimack Valley on Friday.

SANBORN 56, SOUHEGAN 55 (2OT)

Sanborn scored the game winner with three seconds left in double-overtime to get past the Sabers (7-9). Drew Reagan had a great game tallying 24 points. Souhegan hosts Kingswood on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LONDONERRY 66, NASHUA NORTH 27

The Titans (7-9) record their fifth straight loss when they visited the Lancers. Kayla Dahl scored eight points and Lily Small added six. North hosts Windham on Thursday.

BISHOP GUERTIN 65, KEENE 46

Holly Dufoe’s 30 point performance leads the Cardinals (13-4) to their fifth straight win. Maggie Gallagher added eight points for the locals.

BG hosts Timberlane on Friday.

MERRIMACK 59, CONCORD 35

The Tomahawks got 19 points from M. McCarthy and and 17 from A. Cruz as they rolled over the Tide to get their second win of the season (2-14). The win comes after the ‘Hawks gave Alvirne a tough time last week, losing by just three. Merrimack hosts Manchester Memorial on Thursday.

LEBANON 56, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 47

Emily Tebbetts knocked down five three-pointers in the Cavs (8-8) loss. Anika Carlson and Ana O’Donnell each scored nine points. HB visits Merrimack Valley on Friday.

SOUHEGAN 50, SANBORN 29

The Sabers (7-9) win their third straight game with a road win on Tuesday. Phoebe Faucher led with 11 points and Caroline Drum was right behind with 10. Navaya Mortimer, Kayden Merriam and Zofia Rosenfield scored six points apiece. Souhegan visits Kingswood on Friday.

DOVER 54, ALVIRNE 46

The Broncos (9-7) winning streak ends at three with a loss to Dover. Lexi Floyd (12 points), Ella Hartson (10 points), Haylie Christman (eight points), Julia Adams (seven points) and Courtney Anderson (seven points) played well for the locals. Alvirne visits Winnacunnet on Friday.
