SABER SPLASH! Souhegan boys capture Division II crown

The Souhegan High School boys swim team took the fifth Friday night at the Swasey Pool at the University of New Hampshire.

Four times the Sabers had been runnerup in Division II – 2008-09, and 2011-12.

This time, Souhegan broke through, beating Hanover 207-197 to capture its first ever NHIAA Division II boys swim championship.

Oyster River was third at 152 while St. Thomas (125) was fourth and Coe-Brown (114) fifth. Locally, Hollis Brookline was sixth (88) while Milford was eighth with 46 points.

In the girls, Hanover took the title with 241.50 points, ahead of No. 2 Oyster River (133), St. Thomas (129), Bow (120) and Derryfield (111).

Locally, Hollis Brookline was sixth at 103, ahead of area rival Souhegan in seventh (71) while Milford was ninth (54.5).

But the story of the night was the Sabers win, as they enjoyed six first place finishes, two each individually by senior Eddie Barnes and Thatcher Daily. Barnes captured the 200 Free in 1:51.27 as well as 500 Free in 4:55.61. Daily won the 100 Breast in 1:01.50 and the 100 Free in 48.62 seconds.

Barnes, Riley Wilson, Daily and Jonah Saunders teamed up for a win in the 200 Medley Relay in 1:44.46.

Wilson won the 100 Back in 54.15 and also finished second in the 200 IM in 1:58.88. Saunders was sixth.

The Saber 200 Free relay team of Drew Rigaut, Saunders, Daily and Jack Bortolotto took second in 1:43.40. Bortolotto was fifth in the 100 Butterfly. Finally, the Saber 400 free foursome of Bortolotto, Wilson, Barnes and Rigaut finished third in 3:40.16.

With all that scoring, it was easy to see how Souhegan won.

As for HB, the Cavs were led by Jack Ablondi, who was second in the 500 Free in 4:55.78 and same in the 100 Breast in 1:02.05, plus Winston Feeney, who was third in the 100 Fly in 1:03.87 and fifth in the 50 free in 25.62,

The HB 200 Medley relay team of Jack Crooks, Feeney, Ablondi and Thomas Watrous finished fifth and the HB 200 Free relay team of Ablondi, Feeney, Thomas Watrous and Mark Chakarian was fifth also.

Milford got sixths from Jack Bastarache in the 50 and 500 Free and the Spartans 400 Free relay team of Grant Skorupan, Rocco Bartling, Liam Cardin and Bastarache were fifth in 4:34.48.

GIRLS MEET

HB led the locals in the girls event as the Cavs 200 Medley foursome of Mackenzie Talbot, Annika Pisarsky, Lexi Dattis and Charlotte Watrous was second in 2:00.53.

Talbot was third in the 200 IM (2:18.80) as well as the 500 Free (5:32.41). Dattis was fourth in the 100 Fly in 1:05.05. HB’s Pisarsky was fourth in the 100 Breast (1:13.88) seventh in the 200 IM. HB’s 200 Free relay team of Pisarsky, Ava Belmonte, Dattis and Talbot was third in 1:50.34.

Souhegan, meanwhile got two wins each by Izzie Gilbert in the 200 IM in 2:10.01 and the 100 Breast in 1:03.72 and then Keara Wilson in the 50 free in 25.33 seconds and the 100 back in 1:00.10. That gave the school a boy-girls combined total of 10 firsts.

Saber Caitlyn Chorney was seventh in the 100 Fly.

Milford’s Willa Audley was second in the 100 Free in 55.35 seconds and third in the 200 free in 1:59.99. She was part of the sixth place 400 Free relay team with Danika Work, Iris Lemaire and Jasmine Blay, plus the 200 Free relay team that was eighth (Works, Iris Lemaire and Blay).
