It’s been quite a senior year at Campbell High School for football standout Scott Hershberger.
First, he sets the state’s all-time career rushing record. Then he helps the Cougars win a state championship.
And, for the trifecta, Hershberger has announced he will stay in state next year continue his career at the University of New Hampshire.
“After lots of time and consideration, I have decided to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of New Hampshire,” Hershberger announced. “I couldn’t have done it without my parents, coaches, teammates and everyone who has supported me.”
Campbell coach Glen Costello said that it’s believed the Wildcats want Hershberger to play at running back; he excelled at linebacker as well for Campbell.
“Very proud of Scott and what he has accomplished over the past couple of years,” Costello said. “From the state rushing record (6,212 career yards), two-time state champion, Yukica and Gatorade Player of the Year, he worked hs butt off to become one of the all-time greats.
“Couldn’t be happier that he is staying in New Hampshire and look forward to what should be a great next chapter for him.”
Besides the honors and accomplishments Costello mentioned, Hershberger, who helped lead the Cougars to two Division III titles, was a three-time Division III Player of the Year and set the school’s single season rushing record during the 2022 title season with 2,291 yards.
The Gatorade and Yukica awards recognize Hershberger as the best player across all four NHIAA divisions.
Now he’s headed in August east to the only Division I school in his home state.
