HS Roundup: BG girls top Mercy; Cards, MHBDS skaters win

The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team is starting to find its groove

The Cards topped Mercy of Middletown, Conn.on Saturday for their third straight to lead a busy, busy day locally – mainly on the ice, on the mats, and on the track. Here’s the rundown of, believe it or not, the last Saturday in January:

GIRLS BASKETBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 40, MERCY 34

The Cards got a clutch win, leading at all the stops: 15-11 after one, 22-21 at the half and 32-26 after three.

In a close game throughout, Guertin got a key hoops by Holly Dufoe and a Kayden Rioux (a trey) down the stretch.

Thalia Drapeau had 11 and Maggie Gallagher (nine points) led the Cards while Maddie Benigni (11) and Jasmine Bryant (10) paced Mercy, now 10-4.

BG hosts 7-3 Salem in a big test on Tuesday.

BOYS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 7, EXETER 3

The Cards improved to 6-3 led by Jordan O’Hearn’s two goals and two assists while Dom Trepanier had two goals and an assist. Ryan Mogielnicki, Jack Stone and Noah Cordieo (with an assist) all had single goals.

Other assists went to Gavin Santos, James Mantone (two), Jordan Delude, Mike Ponto, and Sean Schultz. Conor Hayes had 23 saves in net.

BG is off until it visits Concord next Saturday.

ST. THOMAS 5, NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 0

The Kings (1-5) had a tough afternoon at Conway Arena, thanks in part to the Saints’ Jackson Estes, who had a hat trick and two assists for a five-point day. Ethan Robinson tried to hold the for in goal for South-Pelham, which takes on rival North-Souhegan Wednesday night.

MERRIMACK-HOLLIS BROOKLINE-DERRYFIELD 2, LEBANON-STEVENS-MASCOMA 0

The WarHawks improved to 6-2-1 as freshman Colin Hamlin had both goals and James Brew had 16 saves in goal. Assists went to Jackson Woods, Alex Gertz (2) and Tyler Allen.

MHBDS takes on Division II local rival Alvirne-Milford on Wednesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

KINGSWOOD-PROSPECT MTN. 4, BISHOP GUERTIN 0

The visiting Cards dropped their third straight to fall to 2-7. The Cards are off until next Saturday when they visit Keene-Monadnock-Fall Mountain.

WRESTLING

NASHUA SOUTH DROPS TWO

The Panthers fell to Pinkerton and Londonderry by identical 65-18 scores.

Against the Astros, Marlon Gomez, Ben Byrne and Logan Rice all got pins. In the match vs. the Lancers, Rice and Gomez got pins.

NASHUA NORTH FALLS TWICE

The Titans fell to Londonderry 49-30 and Pinkerton 50-30. In the Lancers match, Hayden Durocher, Gavi Page, Caleb Smith, and Ruben De Jesus got pins; vs. Pinkerton, it was Durocher, Smith, Julian Palladini, De Jesus and Owen Gagnon with pins.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE WINS TWO

Besides the pins by Caleb Bruseo, HB had a lot of other victories. In the 44-36 win over Pinkerton, pins were by Bruseo, Jameson Keller at 120, Hunter Knight (126), Martin Burns (165)Daniel Hallas (190), and Victor Lomme (113). Michael Marsolini got a technical fall (15-0) at 106 and Jacob Critchfield won a 9-7 decision at 157.

In a 42-38 win over the Lancers, HB wins were by Lomme at 106 (pin), Hunter Knight at 126 (pin), Will Crawford at 132 (pin), Bruseo (138, pin), Hallas at 190 (pin), and Phil Berke at 215 (pin).

BISHOP GUERTIN TAKES TWO OF THREE

The Cards beat Campbell 48-24 and Portsmouth 57-18 but fell to Manchester West, 45-33.

Austin Steinruck (three), James Algeo (three), Dom Stamp (two), Jack Foster (three), and Bishop Kearns (three), Peter Cerrato, Ayla Saeturn, and Wesley Steinruck all got wins.

CAMPBELL DROPS TWO

Against BG and Portsmouth the Cougar winners were Broden Donohue (113, pin), Sage Anctil (150, pin), and Logan Allaire (175, pin).

SOUHEGAN DROPS THREE

The Sabers in the Concord Super Quad fall to the Tide 52-22, Plymouth 42-34, and Salem 54-19.

Souhegan winners were Jack Kaler (two), Landon Carson (two), Ben Smiley (two), Chase Knuckles (two), Gabriel Holt (two), Cole Brandt (two), Noah Daily (two), and Darwin Brown-Waters.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

NORTH DOES WELL AT PHILLIPS EXETER

In the boys meet, North was one-two in the shot put with Darious Smith’s throw of 55-03 and Noah Pasterczyk behind him at 50-07; Titan Luke Peters was second in the 55 dash and long jump;Bunhour Chea was second in the 1000.

In the girls meet, Jhanelle Thomas won the 55 dash in 7.29 seconds and the 300 in 41.46; Tiana Brown took the 55 hurdles in 8.68. The Titans won the 4×200 in 1:51.55 (Brown, Allie Frye, Sarah Frye, Thomas). They also won the 4×400 in 4:12.40 (Brown, Allie Frye, Rosalie Neveu, Thomas)

Laura White was second in the 1500 and the Titans were second in the 4×800 relay. Allie Dandeneau was second in the long jump.
