HOLLIS — For Hollis Brookline wrestler Caden Bruseo, it wasn’t a matter of if, just when.

The Cavs’ senior recorded his 100th career pin during Saturday’s multi-team meet, becoming only the third to do so in HB’s 35-year wrestling history. He also had two other pins as he trails Cavs career leader Dusty Rich (1996) by one, surpassing the former No. 2 on the list, Kayne Robert (2016).

Bruseo recorded his 100th win a year ago, and now he’s taken that one step further, mainly wrestling at 138 pounds.

“One-hundred wins is a milestone in itself,” HB coach Brian Bumpus said, “but 100 pins is even that much more impressive because we don’t wrestle as many matches as we did 20 years ago when every Wednesday was a tri-meet. Our Wednesdays now are primarily dual meets.

“The other key thing for Caden is over two-thirds of his wins are going to be by pin.”

Bruseo’s dedication, Bumpus said, is a reason for his success.

“He started wrestling at an early age, and he hasn’t fallen into that burnout,” Bumpus said. “He continues to work as hard as anybody. He’s put in the time in the weight room, put in his time in the clubs, never takes a practice off, you never see him dogging it in practice. He’s a 138 pounder and his drill partner in practice is a 156 pounder in (Jacob) Critchfield, and Critchfield is an animal. So Caden does not shy away from hard work, the tough go’s.”

Bumpus said that as excited as Bruseo was to reach that accomplishment, “He’s got unfinished business in his mind. Redeeming what went down in the Meet of Champs last year in the finals (a tough loss) to placing at the New Englands. This (career pin) is just another checkbox for him.”
