HS Roundup: North dominates track opener; Milford wrestlers second in Sawyer Invitational

Saturday is often a day of multi-team events in the winter, and that was true yesterday in both local high school indoor track (Opening Day) and wrestling (tourneys).
Here’s a look at Saturday’s success stories:
CO-ED INDOOR TRACK
NORTH DOMINATES
The Nashua North boys and girls indoor track teams dominated a multi-team meet at Plymouth State on Saturday to open the season.
The Titan boys totaled 102 points, almost 50 ahead of second place Coe-Brown (58) and third place Souhegan (56). Locally, Hollis Brookline was fourth at 42.33, while Merrimack was seventh (16.33).
In the girls meet, the Titans totaled 86 points, well ahead of second place Hollis Brookline (58). Souhegan was fifth at 41, and Merrimack was seventh out of 10 teams at 24 points.
In the boys meet, North individual winners included Ryan Mamos in the 600 (1:31.28), Cole Burns in the 3000 (9:54.70), and Darius Smith in the shot put (49-07.00). North took the top four spots in that event.
The Titan 4×400 relay team of Yaxiel Vazquez, Gavin Suchecki, Aaron McNair and Mason Dandeneau took first in 3:41.88.
Luke Peters was second in the 55 dash and was on the second place 4×200 relay team, with Vazquez, Suchecki and Kobe Perry. Suchecki was also second in the high jump ahead of teammate Jack Nelson, who was third. The North shot putters after Smith were Noah Pasterczyk (second), Zariel Cintron Arizmendi and Logan Briggs (third, fourth).
For Hollis Brookline, Sam Bruneau took first in the 55 dash in 6.72 seconds, second in the 300, while Andrew Desmarais was second in the long jump.
Souhegan got wins from Brody Smith in the 300 (38.25) and high jump (5-10), Dallen Noorda in the 1500 (4.21.03)
Thomas Arnoldy was second in the 600
Merrimack’s Nathaniel Bergen was second in the 3000 (9:56.90).
In the girls meet, North winners included Jhanelle Thomas in the 55 dash (7.58 seconds) plus the 55 hurdles (8.70); Rosalie Neveu in the 1000 (3:25.25).
North won both relays. Th 4×200 relay team of Tiana Brown, Sarah Frye, Allison Frye, and Thomas took first in 1:52.54, while Charlotte Wilson, Thomas, Rosalie Neveu and Allison Frye captured the 4×400 in 4:24.41.
Titan Brown was second in the 300 and Sarah Frye same in the long jump.
Hollis Brookline’s Grace Dow was third in the 300 and was on the second place 4×200 relay team along with Maia Arthur, Paige Shirley and Margaret Noble. Annika Bergin was second in the 600,
Souhegan was paced by Ori Dart, first in the 300 (45.44), second in the 55 dash, while Madelyn Mooney took first in the 1500 (5:41.62) and Anora Swanson second in the high jump.
Merrimack’s Melanie Bedard won the 3000 in 11:20.23 while Lilly Anderson was second in the shot put.

WRESTLING
MILFORD SECOND AT TOM SAWYER INVITATIONAL
The Spartans took second at the first annual 18-team tourney, hosted by Souhegan High School, with 132.5 points. Middlebury (173) took top honors while Hollis Brookline (130.5) was third and Souhegan (125) fourth.
Nashua North was seventh at 82.5 and Merrimack was 16th with 18 points.
Milford had four seconds, Jace Wilhemi (150 pounds), Kiki Lorden (120), Nate Post (190) and Tanner Herbert (144).
Eli Wales (215) took third and J.J. Enright (113) and Noah Kittredge (175) grabbed fourths.
For HB, Caden Bruseo took first at 138 as did Victor Lomme at 113. Jacob Critchfield (157) was second, Jameson Keller third at 120, and Phillip Berke (215) and Scout Crea (126) grabbed fourths.
Souhegan got two firsts: Chase Knuckles at 144 and Jack Kaler at 126. The Sabers had two seconds with Cole Brandt (138) and Gabe Holt (215) while Ben Smiley was third at 138 and Austin Silk and Noah Daily fourth at 144 and 165 respectively.
Nashua North got a second from Hayden Durocher at 132; thirds from Kayden Vallerand-kennaeally (150) and Sebastian Ochoa (126), plus a fourth from Gavin Page at 138.
The event was held in memory of late Souhegan teacher Tom Sawyer, who also coached wrestling, soccer and football in the Amherst/Milford community, and died unexpectedly earlier this year.
“This one meant a lot to us,” Milford assistant coach Robbie Milward said, “as Tom was an original Milford wrestler.”
