The Division III championship has been secured, the state career rushing record set.
What’s next for Campbell High School senior running back Scott Hershberger?
More hardware, that’s what.
Hershberger Thursday was named the winner of the 2024 Yukica Player of the Year Award, representing the most outstanding NHIAA football player and awarded by the Joe Yukica/New Hampshire Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Hershberger was selected by the vote of NHIAA head coaches and a panel of statewide media members.
He became the state’s career rushing leader in the Cougars’ semifinal win over Gilford, snapping the mark set by former Souhegan back Sean Jellison. He had 148 yards and two TDs in the Cougars’ 48-7 championship win last Saturday over Inter-Lakes Moultonborough.
“It’s like a dream,” Hershberger said after that game. “It’s exactly how I wanted it to go.”
Same for his career. Hershberger rushed for 2,076 yards this season and ended his career with 6,212 yards on 593 carries. He also was second behind his twin brother Nick in tackles on the team.
“(Scott) can run north-south,” Campbell coach Glen Costello, who coached the Cougars to an 11-0 mark as the state’s only unbeaten team, said in a release yesterday announcing the award. “He has the ability to cut it and go outside and then his vision has gotten significantly better when he’s able to see that cutback.
“I think 4.75 is his best 40-time, but his game speed is higher.”
Hershberger beat out finalists Daniel Batstone of Exeter and Kevin Todisco of Salem, both running backs and defensive standouts, for the award.
Hershberger may not want to lock that trophy case just yet. He’s likely as strong candidate for the Gatorade Player of the Year as well.
