FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Four more locals in playoff battles

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Nov 8, 2024

Campbell back Scott Hershberger will no doubt be a huge factor in Saturday's Division III quarterfinal vs. Somersworth. (Telegraph file photo by TOM KING)

Nashua South-Bishop Guertin playoff game isn’t the only one of the weekend locally as Merrimack, Alvirne, Campbell and Souhegan are all in action either tonight or Saturday.

Here’s a capsule look:

TONIGHT

DIVISION I

NO. 13 MERRIMACK (3-5, 3-6 overall) at NO. 4 PINKERTON (6-2, 7-2 overall)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Pinkerton’s Alumni Stadium in Derry.

LAST WEEK: Merrimack 34, Bishop Guertin 21; Pinkerton 30, Alvirne 17.

REGULAR SEASON: Did not play.

FYI: The Astros have been hit with injuries, but this may be an uphill climb for Merrimack trying to contain Pinkerton’s running game. The QBs are the key; Aiden McDonald for the Astros and Sahil Mujawar for Merrimack. Mujawar has had a solid season as a playmaker.

THE PICK: Pinkerton 42, Merrimack 14. Two teams at different levels. But, hey, upsets do happen.

SATURDAY

DIVISION I

NO. 9 CONCORD (4-4, 4-5 overall) at NO. 8 ALVIRNE (6-3)

WHEN: 1 p.m.

WHERE: Alvirne in Hudson.

LAST WEEK: Pinkerton 30, Alvirne 17; Salem 20, Concord 0.

REGULAR SEASON: Alvirne 30, Concord 14.

FYI: Tough to go against the Broncos here, who will be looking to win their first playoff game since 2019 when they were in Division II. QB Charlie Crawford, tight end Ryan Rochileau, and running back Mike Landmesser are huge; in that first meeting Landmesser finished with 132 rushing yards, while Rocheleau had four catches for 122 yards and two TDs. Concord goes in on a three game losing streak.

THE PICK: Alvirne 24, Concord 14. It’s always tougher in the playoffs, but the Broncos should prevail.

DIVISION II

NO. 5 JOHN STARK (6-3) at NO. 4 SOUHEGAN (7-2)

WHEN: 12 p.m.

WHERE: Souhegan’s Calvetti Field in Amherst.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 47, Hollis Brookline 27; John Stark 34, ConVal 6.

REGULAR SEASON: Souhegan 45, JS 14.

FYI: Two teams on two different levels, despite records and seedings, at least it seems that way. Junior QB Michael Fiengo had a great game in the regular season meeting, throwing for three TDs and rushing for two more. Meanwhile Brody Smith had two TD catches while Ryland Raudelunas had two TDs,and the first string defense pitched a shutout against the QB Joey Dykstra-led Genarals and created four turnovers.

THE PICK: Souhegan 40, JS 7. Rinse and repeat for the Sabers, especially at home.

DIVISION III

NO. 8 SOMERSWORTH (3-5) at NO. 1 CAMPBELL (8-0)

WHEN: 11 a.m.

WHERE: CHS in Litchfield.

LAST WEEK: Stevens 36, Somersworth 22; Campbell 50, Monadnock 26.

REGULAR SEASON: Campbell 38, Somersworth 20.

FYI: In that meeting back in late September, Scott Hershberger had two rushing TDs and one defensive score while Campbell QB Mikey Grace threw for a score and ran for another, while Nick Mackey had a receiving TD. Pretty much expect more of the same in a round that didn’t exist in years past before Division III expanded for this fall. Blayne Belanger and Hunter Fonseca are defensive keys for the ‘Toppers, who can run the football.

THE PICK: Campbell 41, Somersworth 14. Scott Hershberger gives the home team a quick 21-0 lead and that’s that.
