They did it again.

Last Saturday the Bishop Guertin High School boys cross country team captured the Division I title. Yesterday they took top honors overall in the state, winning the Meet of Champions at Alvirne High School. The Cards (64 points) were led by their top runner, Matt Giardina, who was the overall winner in 14:58.41 with a new course record, avenging last week’s division meet individual loss to Keene’s Sullivan Sturtz, who yesterday came in second in 15:11.21.

“He was a man on a mission,” BG coach Tom Cassetty said. “Actually every one of our guys PR’d today (personal records). The training is working. … They ran phenominally.”

Nashua South finished third at 86, led by Daniel Byrne, who was fifth overall in 15:34.52.

Souhegan (10, 226), Alvirne (12, 275) and Milford (13, 345) also competed as teams while other locals ran as individual qualifiers.

In the girls race won by Oyster River (71), Nashua North was the top local, finishing seventh at 249 with Laura White leading the way with a third place overall finish in 18:01.60. Bishop Guertin (252) was ninth while other local teams were Alvirne (12th, 285) and Souhegan (15th, 349).

BOYS HIGHLIGHTS

It was BG’s second overall title in the last four years. Guertin didn’t have four in the top 10 like last week but settled for three, the other two being Ethan Fischer (seventh, 15:36.76) and Carson Fischer (10, 15:44.74). Sam Prescott was 16th (15:53.69) while William Moores (51, 16:45.10) finished the scoring.

“I really thought it was going to be closer than it was,” Cassetty said. “It was incredible to watch. … It has been a year. We’re building a program and it’s fun.”

South’s other top runners were Camdon Brien (21, 16:02.18), Andrew Byrne (27, 16:08. 57), Cam Patronick (32, 16:20.36) and Ryan DuVarney (37, 16:30.05). Matthew Mortherway was 46th.

Souhegan was led by Daniel Noorda (24, 16:03.35) and Ryan Quinn (60).

Alvirne’s Brent Dunning was 40th (16:32.82) and Sam Matson (61); Milford was paced by Will Whitley (52, 16:45.27)

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

After White, Anna Fondakowski made it two locals in the top 10 in 18:46.80, while Souhegan’s Samantha Swanbon was 13th in 18:51.07.

Also for North, Rosalie Neveu was 35th (19:49.27) while Claire Hathaway-Rube was 88th. Guertin’s Lyla Masson was 39th (19:57.48) while two other BG finishers were Anna Sinclair (76) and Shannon Forsyth (77).

Alvirne was led by Anna Simpson (40, 119:59.08) and Olivia Cartagena (52, 20:12.47). Milford’s Jayln Paul was 47th (20:09.01). Hollis Brookline’s Mae Butler was 70th.

The top six boys and girls teams from Saturday advance to the New Englands at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn next Saturday, as well as the top 25 individual runners from yesterday.
