BEDFORD – Emily Tebbetts yelled for the ball, and her Hollis Brookline High School field hockey teammate Nyah Jernberg heard her.
Jernberg passed her the ball — Ashley Disco also helped guide it — and Tebbetts let a screaming shot fly. And the rest is Cavalier championshp history.
The HB senior scored the only goal the Cavaliers would need with 5:24 left in the first half, although Addison Marchant would add another late in the third quarter as the Cavaliers beat John Stark 2-0 capture the Division II state title in the chill at Bedford High School’s Bulldog Stadium.
“That’s my shot,” she said. “That’s the play. Again, I can do that without my teammates. I’m so happy, this is a great accomplishment. We worked for this, we deserve it.”
The win ends John Stark’s two-year rein, as the No.3 Generals finished 15-4.
“I just knew we were fired up, I knew we were ready,” HB coach Greg Cochrane, who has won the title in just his third year as the Cavs head coach, actually as a field hockey head coach, period. “We just came out like we were shot out of a cannon…
“We controlled, we tried to beat them to the ball, we tried to be in front of their players all night. We keyed in certain players and then we adjusted as we needed to. You saw it. The girls wanted it bad and they came out and took it.”
“HB came out strong, we did too,” John Stark coach Cassidy Huckins said. “They executed their goals off of corners. That’s how they win their games. Unfortanately we did our very best to try and prevent the corners, but their speed, their defense, everything was unmatched.
“We did everything we could to get the ball (downfield), we just couldn’t execute.”
The 18-1 Cavs had nine penalty corners, six in the first half, and Tebbetts’ goal came on the sixth. If the Generals had a shot the entire game, you may have missed it, as it was just one that HB goalie Maddie Barich had to deal with. Stark only had three penalty corners the entire game.
The put a little pressure on HB in the third quarter, but by period’s end things had reversed. Addison Marchant, with 19.8 seconds left in the period, knocked down a deflected shot by Jernberg into the open goal with the Generals’ goalie Rowin Ledy was out dealing with the pressure. That gave HB a 2-0 lead heading into the final quarter, and basically removed any doubt.

The team took a very systematic approach all season, knowing that the next game was always the most important one.
“We tried to keep everything in front of us,” Cochrane said, talking about the one step at a time approach. “I feel like I opened the door, and showed them the way, and they definitely kicked that door in and ran with it.”
All the way to a championship celebration.
