HS Tourney Roundup: South volleyball stunned; BG, Merrimack advance

There’s good and bad news when it comes to the other locals in the Division I girls volleyball tourney.
The good: Bishop Guertin and Merrimack are moving on. The bad: Nashua South isn’t. Here are the details that include a couple of career milestones, plus a look at today’s action:
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
DIVISON I PRELIMS
NO. 4 BISHOP GUERTIN 3, NO. 13 PORTSMOUTH 0
The Cardinals (15-4) advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals with a 25-13, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of the Clippers.
It was a big night for Akira Coravos, as the outside hitter reached a career 500 kills.
Hitter Allison Marino, libero Veronica Gomez, and setter Brooke Partridge were keys in the win.
The Cards will now host No. 12 Concord (9-10) in the quarters on Saturday.
NO. 9 MERRIMACK 3, NO. 8 WINDHAM 2
The Tomahawks rallied from being down 2-0 to win the remaining three sets, 25-22, 25-20, 15-12. The first two were 22-25, 14-25.
Amelia Walker had 17 kills with two blocks, two aces and four digs, while hitter Rachel Flett added 13 kills, three aces, and four digs.
Also for the ‘Hawks, Leah Monroe (seven kills, three blocks), Noor Eldeib (32 assists, two aces, four digs) and Sofia Victal (nine digs) were big contributors.
Now 13-6, the Tomahawks head to face unbeaten top seed Bedford on Saturday at 10 a.m.
NO. 12 CONCORD 3, NO. 5 NASHUA SOUTH 2
It was an abrupt end to the season for the 13-6 Panthers, who fell 15-13 in the decisive fifth set at the Belanger Gym.. They won sets two (27-25) and four (25-21) but lost the opener 25-16 and the third set 25-22.
Mia Suljic had 19 kills, 12 digs and six assists, and one of those digs was the 500th in her fabulous career.
Molly Lecklider (12 kills, 18 digs) and Elanni Romero (eight kills, one block) also were big keys for South.
TODAY’S GAMES
It’s girls soccer’s day, and the city of Nashua has a big Division I quarterfinal between rivals No. 8 Nashua North (10-6-1) and No. 1 Bishop Guertin (14-1-1) at Rivier University’s Merrill Field at 2:30 p.m.
North,which downed rival Nashua South 2-1 in the prelims in overtime, fell to BG 4-0 two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, defending Division II champion, No. 1 undefeated (16-0) Hollis Brookline takes on No. 9 Pembroke (8-7-2) at 5:30 p.m. in Hollis. The Spartans edged ConVal 2-1 in the prelims and fell 5-0 to the Cavs in Hollis way back on Sept. 6.
