FOOTBALL THURSDAY: Sabers roll past Cavs, Spartans fall

HOLLIS – It was the “Get right” game for one team vs. another that is still searching for the Get Right Year.

Yes, the Souhegan High School football team needed to get back on the positive track after two tough losses to fellow Division II contenders Plymouth and Pelham, and they got it Thursday night with a 47-27 win over the Hollis Brookline Cavaliers.

In other local Division II action, Pelham beat Milford 40-6.

“We call it the ‘get right’ game, in terms of fundamentally let’s be great, get a lot of guys in, and we were able to do that,” Sabers coach Robin Bowkett said, his team geared up for the post season beginning next weekend at 7-2. “We needed this going into the playoffs.”

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers finished their second straight winless year (0-9) and ended up with less than 20 players due to injuries, etc. from a roster that lists 40. Interim head coach Milt Robinson, the founder of the program who returned in a pinch to try to right what was, just before COVID hit, a smooth sailing ship, did what he could.

“It’s tough,” said Robinson, who wouldn’t commit to a return when asked. “It’s been an interesting year. But it’s been fun. The kids gave me their heart.

“And Robin (whom Robinson once coached at Souhegan when Bowkett was the Sabers QB) was great. It was great coaching the last game against him.”

For the Sabers, running back Liam Fisher had two TDs, while Lincoln Wilkins had a receiving TD. Aidan McGrath had a pick six, and Brayden Hickman scored late in the first half. Saber freshman Kobe Morin scored on a 22-yard run in the final couple of minutes.

HB got a spark from senior QB Dylan Morelli, who found sophomore Cole Duncan on a 21-yard pass to set up a score. And Jacob Velez hit Duncan on a 35-yard halfback option pass to set up another.

Robinson knew the numbers would be low, and tried to recruit other athletes in the school. He hit on a good one in sprinter Sam Bruneau, who scored three TDs last night, including one that made it 13-6 early on and a 45-yarder in the second half.

“He’s fun to coach,” Robinson said. “When he can break into the open field, not many people can catch him.”

Another key was that Robinson got a junior varsity team going, which was huge, and it went 3-3. “I’m happy that started again, and whoever takes over, I’m hoping that JV team keeps going,” Robinson said. “It’s so important. And the Junior Cavs (youth) have about 30 kids coming up, so hopefully the program will come back to where it should be.”

Meanwhile, the Sabers want to get back to where they feel they should be, which is a deep playoff run. The losses to Plymouth (in OT) and Pelham stung, but Bowkett felt they got a lot out of it.

“Just their physical toughness and mental toughness in both those two games,” Bowkett said. “Our guys kept battling which I really love.

“We get the extra rest going into the playoffs (with the Thursday game). We’ll get on the tape, get better, see who our (quarterfinal) opponent is in the next few days, and look to go 1-0 next week.”

PELHAM 48, MILFORD 6

The Spartans end the season 1-8, while the Pythons are 8-1 and likely the second seed in the Division II playoffs.

Milford’s Kayden Tessier had a 64-yard TD reception, while defensively Jace Wilhemi had 11 tackles.

“We held on until the fourth until the levy broke,” Milford coach Max Morelli said. “One of our best games. Still unfortunate results, but a positive step nonetheless.”
