FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Teams jockeying for playoff position

The playoffs are just a week away, and a few games tonight may have bearing on a couple of spots.

Here’s a capsule look at the weekend, which also includes the Division III Game of the Year:

TONIGHT

DIVISION I

GOFFSTOWN (2-6) at NASHUA SOUTH (6-1 Division I, 7-1 overall)

WHEN: 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Souhegan High School’s Calvetti Field.

LAST WEEK: Goffstown 40, Manchester Central 6; Bedford 38, Nashua South 14.

LAST YEAR: Goffstown 33, Nashua South 20.

FYI: The Grizzlies came alive with their best game of the season last week, while the Panthers had their worst. South won’t have receiver Josh Tripp, likely out for at least a couple of weeks with a bad ankle sprain, but they have the depth to survive in this one. If they win this it’s likely South would go into the playoffs as the fourth seed, or the top seed of the non-bye teams.

THE PICK: South 40, Goffstown 14. Panthers bounce back strong.

BISHOP GUERTIN (4-3 Division I, 5-3 overall) at MERRIMACK (2-5 Division I, 2-6 overall)

WHEN: 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: MHS Student Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Nashua North 31, Merrimack 21; Salem 42, Bishop Guertin 21.

LAST YEAR: Bishop Guertin 28, Merrimack 7.

FYI: The ball could be in the air a lot in this one. Merrimack has struggled with the run, and QB Sahil Mujawar is their key cog, running and throwing. Guertin, looking to improve their playoff seeding, has seen sophomore QB Nate Bowen become a prolific passer and A.J. Holmes will be the best back on the field. The thing is, Merrimack will go all out hoping to have at least a chance to make the playoffs with a win.

THE PICK: BG 28, Merrimack 27. This could be a good one.

PINKERTON (6-2) at ALVIRNE (5-2 Division I, 6-2 overall)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Alvirne High School stadium.

LAST WEEK: Pinkerton 44, Concord 13; Alvirne 41, Keene 12.

LAST YEAR: Pinkerton 51, Alvirne 6.

FYI: This will be a great test for the Broncos to see if they are, for lack of a better phrase, ready for prime time. The Astros are among the elite, nearly beat Bedford, and are led by a dual pass/run threat in Aiden McDonald. Alvirne QB Charlie Crawford may need to air it out and the Broncos will need a strong game from back Mike Landmesser.

THE PICK: Pinkerton 34, Alvirne 20. Broncos compete but Astros have too much firepower.

DIVISION III

CAMPBELL (7-0) at MONADNOCK (7-0)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Monadnock Regional in Swanzey.

LAST WEEK: Neither team played.

LAST YEAR: Campbell 37, Monadnock 6.

FYI: This could definitely be a preview of the Division III title game, and it’s been a great rivalry over the years. It’s Campbell’s first and only test of the regular season. While it’s a given Scott Hershberger will be huge for the Cougars, the key is Campbell’s defense stopping Monadnock’s running game, which averages a whopping 336.6 yards per game, led by back Nick Ball (682 yards, 8.2 average with 10 TDs).

THE PICK: Campbell 28, Monadnock 24. This could be a good one.

SATURDAY

DIVISION I

NASHUA NORTH (2-6) at CANISIUS (6-2)

WHEN: 1 p.m.

WHERE: Koessler Field in West Seneca, N.Y.

LAST WEEK: Nashua North 31, Merrimack 21; Canisius 28, Huron Heights (Ontario) 0.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Titans unleashed Luke Fortier again and he had a career day last week vs. the Tomahawks, over 300 total yards combined in rushing, receiving, returning. Sophomore back Elijah Kimble and senior back Jahyden Clark pace Canisius. Small roster but very athletic.

THE PICK: Canisius 30, North 28. Really, who knows? Either way, it should be a great trip for North.
