HS Football Notebook: Final call ahead for playoff spots

The final week of the local high school regular season has arrived, and now the question is who will be playing postseason games after next weekend?
In Division I, it will definitely be Nashua South (6-1 in division) and Alvirne (6-2), and pretty much Bishop Guertin (4-3). Merrimack (2-5) may have very faint hopes, while Nashua North (2-6 and done with the division )does not.
In Division II, it’s just Souhegan, a definite, at 6-2; no chance for Milford (1-7) and Hollis Brookline (0-8).
In Division III, obviously Campbell at 7-0, set to face perhaps its future title game opponent in Mondadnock on Friday night.
So there you go. Now, seeds, etc., we’ll leave that for the results next weekend.
SOUTH’S SILVER LINING
The one team that knows it will be home for the first round after losing out on a by e is Nashua South, which fell to Bedford 38-14 on Friday night in the battle for the West Conference and possible overall top seed.
“We’re not dead yet,” South coach Scott Knight said with a chuckle. “We have Goffstown on Friday night and hopefully take care of business there, and be 8-1.
“We were 1-7 last year at this time.”
Knight would like to get a win over Goffstown, the game slated to be at Souhegan High School’s Calvetti Field, and most likely be a No. 4 seed, and play in the first round.
“Get home field for a couple of rounds, hopefully,” Knight said, “and who knows, maybe end up back here again (at Bedford in the semis) hopefully.”
Knight said the silver lining of Friday night’s loss is really that the Panthers will play in the first round. “Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to win,” he said. “But I’m just not a fan of bye weeks.”
However, the Panthers may go through the postseason without one of their best players, wide receiver/defensive back Josh Tripp. He was injured making a leaping catch in the first half Friday night, an ankle/lower leg type injury that did not allow him to return. “We’ll see where that goes,” Knight said.
MERRIMACK HAD CHANCES
Merrimack, meanwhile, was hoping for a Bishop Guertin win at Salem, so that if the Tomahawks beat BG this Friday, they’d get more points. “Who knows with the way the point rating works,” Merrimack coach Kip Jackson said. “But win the games your playing, you don’t have to worry about it. Control your own destiny, and you don’t have to worry about it.”
What has to be painful for the ‘Hawks if they miss out is the fact they lost two home games by a point each to Goffstown and Windham. Win those, they would be all set.
NORTH’S BIG TRIP
If you want to see the Titans play this weekend, you’ll have to go all the way to Buffalo.
That’s where they’re headed very early Friday morning, as they’re set to play Canisius High School at Koessler Field in West Seneca, N.Y. next Saturday at 1 p.m.
“I can’t wait,” North coach Chad Zibolis said. “The kids are excited, we’re excited.”
Zibolis said he talks often with Canisius coach Kraig Kurzanski, whose team is 6-2 and will be competing in its postseason the following weekend.
“We know they’re going to be really good,” Zibolis said. “(Kurzanski) and I communicate, he knows what we’re coming for, he knows it’s a team building trip for us. It’s gonna be cool to see some of these kids play and see our kids play against them. Just playing in a different state is just awesome.”
The Titans have some good plans. On the way on Friday they have a tour scheduled to see the Syracuse Carrier Dome, will get fed by Canisius when they arrive and have a walk through on their field. And they’re going to Niagara Falls, and then get to the hotel around 8:30 Friday night.
“I think it’s going to be a cool thing,” Zibolis said. “If everything goes well, it’d be something to do every year, I’d love to.”
HALLOWEEN GAMES FOR DIVISION II LOCALS
The regular season for Souhegan and overall seasons for Milford and Hollis Brookline will end on Thursday night, Halloween. The Sabers will visit Hollis Brookline at 7 p.m. while the Spartans will be at Pelham, same time.
Despite losses this past weekend, both Milford and HB had some players do some good things. For the Cavs, Sam Bruneau had 179 yards and two TDs on the ground, while Dylan Morelli had 220 passing yards with a TD. Cam Nichols (rushing TD), Jacob Velez (TD catch, two two-point conversion catches) all did good things as the Cavs scored a season high 29 points at Hanover (a 52-29 defeat).
For Milford, which lost a close one, 27-20 vs. ConVal, Jason Daykin had a blocked punt, Logan Chamberlain a 1-yard TD run, Liam Zahn an interception plus a fumble return for a TD, and Kadyn Tessior an 80 yard TD as well as an interception.
