NASHUA – From famine to a feast for the Bishop Guertin High School girls soccer team.

The Cards couldn’t wait to get back on the field after Monday’s scoreless tie vs. Timberlane in the raw mist. Tuesday the Nashua High School South girls found out why as Guertin scored two goals in the first five minutes for an eventual 3-0 win, almost ruining the fun of a good rivalry. It was over too soon.

“They were upset yesterday,” Bishop Guertin coach Chris Millett said. “I could definitely see after the game that they were upset; it’s interesting for a team to be upset after a tie. But I could see in their expressions and how they showed up today that they were ready to rock’n’roll.”

Ava Suech finished a ball that was sitting on the outside post for a 1-0 lead, and Kelsey Ackerman made it 2-0 with a similar goal not much later. Assists went to Sophia Hickey and Zoe Horton.

Finally, sophomore Emerson Brown boomed a free kick that Panthers keeper Corinne Rivera had no chance on for a 3-0 BG lead about nine minutes in.

“The first three minutes of the game was the game,” South coach Curt Dutilley said. “We played it back twice in our own end. It was just one of those situations when you’re not even into the flow of the game. … The first one, emotionally you could see it was too quick. Then they got the second one, and then the game leveled out.”

“I think we moved the ball lot better today,” Millett said, his 11-1-1 team extending its unbeaten streak to 12 games. “I was very proud of how we played, especially out of our back. We did a great job of putting their back line under a lot of pressure.”

But the Cards weren’t able to pop another one in, to the 6-5-2 Panthers’ credit. In the second half, South had three really top-notch chances, but Cards keeper Jess Lacroix ruined two of them. First she made a big diving stop on an Ella Bois shot. Her best save was on a rocket from South’s Natalee Thomas that she reached up high and knocked away. Thomas had another golden opportunity that just trickled wide.

“I was looking for like six, seven eight chances in the second half,” Dutilley said. “I think we got four or five good ones, three really good ones. We made a decent adjustment at halftime.

“But 2-0 in three minutes is hard recover from. You’ve got to score one back almost immediately.”

“They have some really talented players on their team,” Millett said of South. “Ava Kopicko is a great player, she was doing everything for them today. But ultimately, especially coming off of yesterday, I was very proud of the energy we brought to the field today.”
