HS Football Notebook: Big games for local unbeatens ahead

We’re heading into Week 7 in local high school football, and there are three local unbeatens at 6-0: Nashua South, Souhegan, and Campbell.
And one of them, Souhegan, has a huge game on Friday night as Plymouth comes to Amherst in a battle of unbeatens.
“Next week, we got Plymouth coming to town. We’ve had a great, great last few games with them,” Sabers coach Robin Bowkett said. “We know what we’re getting. I think they’re one of the best teams in the state of New Hampshire.
“They return a lot of guys from last year’s team that knocked us out of the playoffs, and now we got our hands full with a great football team, with a great club coming down, coming our place next week, but I think it’s going to be an awesome game, and I know a lot of people around the state will be watching. It’ll be fun.”
Nashua South, meanwhile, will be at Merrimack in a key local contest. It’s been a great rivalry over the years, and Merrimack has to feel it could be better than 2-3 in Division I (2-4 overall) because it has two losses by one point each at home, 20-19 to Goffstown a few weeks ago but then 28-27 on Friday when quarterback Sahil Mujawar was sacked on a two-point conversion attempt.
“Oh I know,” Tomahawks coach Kip Jackson said of the two close losses changing the season. “I know. But it is what it is, we’ll go back to work and try to get ready for a really good South team.
“They’re very good. They’ve got good athletes, good coaches, and all that stuff.”
And, looking ahead, which the Panthers will try hard not to, is unbeaten Bedford in two weeks. The home stretch will be interesting.
Campbell, meanwhile, will have to head up to 2-3 Lebanon on Friday, the Raiders having dropped down to Division III just a few years removed from being in the Division II semis.
How good has this Campbell team been playing?
“I’m pretty happy,” Cougars coach Glen Costello said. “Continuing to improve weekly, lots of young players stepping up. Hopefully the bye week in two weeks will help us get healthy for the playoffs.”
Following that week off, they’ll have a playoff tuneup in what shapes up to be the Division III Game of the Year at Monadnock.
CARDIAC AND INJURED CARDS
Bishop Guertin, now 3-2 in Division I, has played won its last two games by a total of four points – 43-42 10 days ago over city rival Nashua North, and 27-24 on Nate Bowen’s 37-yard field goal Saturday night over Keene at Merrimack College’s Duane Stadium.
“Getting my blood pressure up,” Cards coach Anthony Nalen said.
Guertin, which hosts Dover next Saturday night at Hollis Brookline High School’s stadium, is banged up. Three receivers were out for Saturday night, including Sam Fayad, who was injured in practice and gone for the season.
And the other night they lost key two-way lineman Aaron Chmielecki (leg injury), and that impacted the running game a bit.
“He’s the anchor of (the line), and he’s the communicator,” Nalen said.
One thing that’s been working is the passing game. Keene coach Linwood Patinode says he knows why.
“Their timing passing game is really good,” Patinode said. “They’ll run those hitches, they’ll run those slants, it’s timed up so well, they beat our (defensive backs).”
DEPTH FOR THE SABERS
When Plymouth does come to town on Friday, they’ll have to pick their poison when it comes to defending the Sabers.
“I think the great thing about our team is that it’s not just one guy,” Sabers coach Robin Bowkett said. “One game it might be Rylan Raudelunas, one game might be Mike Fiengo, Brody Smith, and then this game (Friday’s win over Milford), I think Braden Hickman had three touchdowns. And sometimes it’s just the way it goes.
“He continues to play at a really high level, especially coming back from ACL surgery last year. You know, we’re gonna need him down the stretch in all phases of the game. There were a lot of guys that played well for us.”
