The Alvirne High School football team needed a bounce-back win on Thusday night, and they got it.
Leading 22-14 at halftime, the Broncos pulled away in the second half for a resounding 49-22 win over the Spaulding Red Raiders in Rochester, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Broncos QB Charlie Crawford had a rushing TD and ran for 110 yards, and also threw two TD passes to Ryan Rochileau.
Mike Landmesser added two rushing scores for Alvirne, now 4-2 in Division I and pushing toward a second straight playoff berth with three weeks to go.
It was definitely a tale of two halves — but only after the Broncos made a big stop as Spaulding recovered an on-side kick to start the third quarter. Just one of the few things the Red Raiders did to irritate the visitors, but only up to a point.
“(Spaulding) controlled the ball in the first half and got 4-5 yards a play to move the chains,” Alvirne coach Matt Lee said. “We couldn’t get off the field on fourth-and-short.
“But in the second half, we scored on our first possession to get a cushion, and we put some stops together and played much better in in the second half on defense.”
But the Broncos offense came through in a big way as the Red Raiders fell to 1-5.
“Our offense played great,” Lee said. “We scored on every possession. But Spaulding did a good job of shorting the game.”
And the Broncos, who are off until they host Concord on Friday, Oct. 18, did a good job of winning it.
