LONDONDERRY – The Londonderry High School football team spent the week fuming about its loss on Mack Plaque Weekend.
Friday night, the Lancers took out their frustrations on Alvirne.
Sam Ogden and Adrian Cruz led a Londonderry offense that gained almost five hundred yards and jumped on the Broncos early on the way to a 44-0 win over Alvirne in a Division I Central Conference game.
Ogden ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries while Cruz added 109 yards and a score on eight carries as the Lancers (3-1 in D1, 3-2 overall, No. 4 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.
Carson Palma, Alex Villa and Griffin Massahos added a rushing touchdown apiece and Blake Thompson kicked a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to account for the scoring for Londonderry. The Lancers piled up 494 yards of offense, with 443 coming on the ground at 13.4 yards per carry.
“It was very important,” Ogden said of having that kind of performance. “We had chips on our shoulder from last week and what they were saying about us. We had to come out and prove (we could win).
“Coach (Jimmy) Lauzon said we had the best week of practice and the best walk-through he’s seen in a while. It was very important to have that focus throughout the week.”
Coming off a 38-15 loss to Pinkerton a week ago, Lauzon saw the response he was hoping for from the Lancers in the practices leading up to the game.
“Monday was probably the best walkthrough I’ve had in 10 years,” the Londonderry coach said. “It was laser-beam focus. Their heads were going up and down when we were going through film and I was going through mistakes.
“We showed them comparisons to years past, how we normally fly to the football, how we normally play defense. I tell them hustle is not a goal, it’s an expectation.”
Alvirne coach Matt Lee certainly expected to see an angry group of Lancers, but he also thought his team would be able to keep up, particularly on defense.
“We’ve been playing really good defense and it just didn’t seem like we could get them on the ground all night for less than 10 yards,” Lee said. “It’s a humbling experience for sure.”
For the second week in a row, the Broncos (3-2, No. 8) struggled to move the ball on the ground, rushing for 39 yards, with leading rusher Mike Landmesser held to minus-2 yards on six carries.
Charlie Crawford finished 15 of 27 passing for 137 yards and had 41 yards on the ground, but when Alvirne was able to cross midfield, they were unable to finish drives.
“That’s a good team,” Lauzon said. “I did not expect this outcome, and if we saw them again, I’m sure it wouldn’t be the same. (Landmesser) was the guy we were really focused on with his speed.
“We corralled him and I thought that was good. The quarterback kept a lot of plays alive. We have to do a better job containing him in the pocket. We were impressed with them on film.”
Londonderry took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards on just five plays, going up 7-0 on Palma’s 28-yard scoring run.
Alvirne went three-and-out, thanks to three pre-snap penalties, and the Lancers found the end zone quickly again, this time on a 65-yard run by Cruz. The Broncos blocked the extra point to keep it 13-0 Londonderry with 6:21 to go in the first.
A 36-yard completion from Crawford to Ryan Rocheleau on Alvirne’s next possession helped the Broncos get into Londonderry territory, but the drive stalled at the Lancers 25. Seven plays later, Ogden scored on a 49-yard run to make it 20-0 with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
The Broncos drove inside the Londonderry 25 twice in the second half, but came away empty handed both times.
“We’re at a crossroads now,” Lee said. “Two losses in a row, we’re banged up, but no one is going to feel too sorry for us. We’ll see how we rebound.”
