South’s Schnyer close in Decathlon; Warriors’ Duffy leads Heptathlon

NASHUA – There is a local well within striking distance in the 67th annual New Hampshire Decathlon.
Say hello to Nashua High School South’s Ethan Schnyer, who totaled 3,058 points, just behind Winnacunnet’s Oliver Duffy, who has 3,195 in the top spot after five events. Phillips Exeter’s Dan Musulman is third at 2,861.
Besides Schnyer, there are three other locals in the top 10: South’s Barion Perry (sixth, 2,839 points), Nashua North’s Gavin Suchecki (seventh, 2825), and fellow Titan Darius Smith (ninth, 2,780).
Meanwhile, in the 47th Heptathlon, Newport’s Maddox Lovely is the leader after one day with 2,406 points, while Kearsarge’s Amelia Lefebvre is second at 2,053 and HaydenAdams of Winnacunet third with 1,989. The top local would be Nashua South’s Sarah Witta, who is 10th with 1,713 while Souhegan’s Mary Howell is 15th with 1,626.
Here’s a further look at Day 1 of both, with three events set for today to finish up the Heptathlon: the long jump, javelin and 800 and the Decathlon will end with five: the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500:
DECATHLON
Schnyer captured the 400 in 51.70, was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.72 seconds, second in the long jump at 5.95 meters, 63rd in the shot put at 8.45 meters and tied for third with leader Duffy in the high jump at 1.82 meters.
The shot put was dominated by locals, as Smith won it at 15.47, beating his South rival Elyza Mercado (second, 14.30).

Duffy was 12th in the 100, but captured the long jump (6.19), was 13th in the shot put, and just behind Schnyer in the 400 in 51.77.
Perry’s highlight was a fourth in the 400 and tied for fifth in the high jump. Suchecki captured the high jump at 1.92 meters.
The other event winner was Paul Butler, who took the 100 in 11.64 and is fourth overall with 2,846.
HEPTATHLON
Lovely’s strengh was in winning the 100 meter hurdles right off the bat in 16.06 seconds, and later the 200 in 26.52. She was fourth in the high jump (1.42 meters) and seventh in the shot put (8.21).
Her closest challenger, Lefebvre, was 14th in the 100 hurdles, fourth in the high jump, second in the shot put (10.39) and third in the 200 (27.95 seconds).
Locally, Witta’s highlight was her fifth place in the hurdles (17.91 seconds). She was 18th in the high jump, tied for 36th with fellow Panther Camrin Ayi in the shot put, and 16th in the 200.
The other event winners were Winnisquam’s Lauren MacDonald in the shot (10.73) and Plymouth’s Anelie Flynn in the high jump (1.52 meters).
