The two local high school boys lacrosse teams that were in their respective championship games last year are returning.
For No.2 Bishop Guertin in Division I, it’s old hat. The Cardinals have reached an incredible 19 straight championship games, the latest via their 12-4 win over No. 3 Exeter on Wednesday at Bill Ball Stadium.
Meanwhile No. 2 Campbell in Division III, which reached its first title game last June, is back again after beating the team that downed them in those finals, the Hopkinton Hawks, 13-4 in the semis at Laconia’s Bank of New Hampshire Stadium.
The Cards got three goals each from Caleb Yeung and Sean McGarry, as well as two by Cam Hayden and Michael Ponto, plus single scores from Micah Dunsmoor and Jeremy Warren.
Will Murphy had five saves and Mike MacDonough three for the Cards, who won 10 of 20 faceoffs.
BG will take on No. 1 Bedford, which pasted No. 4 Pinkerton, 15-2, in the later game. Both Division I semis were delayed over an hour by the storms that hit the seacoast area. Game time at Bill Ball Stadium Saturday is 5 p.m.
As for the Cougars, they’ll be taking on No. 5 Bow, which knocked off No. 1 Pelham, 10-7. Game time for Campbell-Bow on Saturday in Laconia is 5 p.m. a well.
No. 3 Hopkinton couldn’t out-tough the Cougars in their Division III boys’ lacrosse semifinal Wednesday night. The Hawks ended their season with a 13-4 loss to the team they beat a year ago for the state title — one with a roster that was simply too fast and too strong to dismantle.
The game was over nearly as soon as it began.
“They were kind of like lightning, and we were a little too slow for that,” Hopkinton coach Deacon Blue said of the Cougars.
When the first quarter ended, Campbell led 5-1. The Cougars played a strong and fast game that the Hawks had trouble stopping. Senior goalkeeper Colby Boissy kept taking punches: He managed just six saves before too many aggressive plays sent him off the field with a torn meniscus.
Hopkinton junior midfielder Ozzie Rosenholm sprinted all the way down the field and bounced the ball into the Cougars’ goal. The game had become recoverable, with the Hawks trailing 8-4.
But Rosenholm was the last of the Hawks to score this season, while Campbell ran away with five more goals to put the game away and quash real hopes of a comeback by the end of the third period.
