The Campbell High School baseball team’s dream of getting to the program’s first Division III title game since 2017 evaporated on Tuesday, courtesy of a 14-0 semifinal loss to No. 3 Monadnock in which they managed just two hits.
Thus the No. 2 Cougars (16-2) saw their 16-game winning streak come to an end. It was close, with the Cougars trailing the Huskies 3-0 in the top of the sixth. But Monadnock broke things open with four runs, then added seven more in the top of the seventh. Their original three runs came in the top of the first.
Monadnock’s Ben Dean, a Dayton commit, pitched out of a couple of jams early, fanning Jack Kidwell and Braydon White back to back in the fifth with a runner in scoring position. Also, walked the bases loaded in the third, but caught White looking to end that threat. He stymied the Cougars with 11 strikeouts and allowing just one hit over six before the pen took it in the seventh. Cougar hits were by Hunter Henderson and Luke Delia.
Monadnock will now take on No. 4 Belmont — the only other team to beat Campbell this season — in Saturday’s Division III finals at Manchester’s Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, time tba.
