Meet of Champions: Locals shine once again in Durham

Darius Smith almost got complete revenge, but the Nashua North junior settled for one out of two with his Nashua South rival, Elyza Mercado.

After losing out to Nashua South’s Elyza Mercado in the shot put and discus in last week’s Division I meet, the Nashua North junior beat Merado in the shot, 53-9 to 48-7.75 in Sunday’s Meet of Champions held at the University of New Hampshire.

But Mercado ended up getting a split with Smith on the day, taking the discus at 155-5, just ahead of second place Smith’s 154-2.

The day also featured top performances from athletes such as Soraya Ross of Nashua South, Jhanelle Thomas of North, Matt Giardina of Bishop Guertin, etc.

Other boys highlights included Giardina capturing the 3200 meter run in 9:16.96, while South’s Dante Castellano was third in 9:28.18.

Milford captured the 4×400 relay in 3:27.02 with Kenyon Sora, Logan Korthals, Will Whitley and Avery Wilson running.

The Panthers took second in the 4×100 relay in 42.74, paced by Marcell Perry, Michael Menezes, Tim Stavely and Ethan Schnyer. Leonel Lopes and Ryan Jansen were also listed.

South’s Barion Perry was third in the 400 in 49.61, as was Ethan Schnyer in the 200 in 22.22 seconds.

Nashua South’s 4×800 relay team of Daniel and Andrew Byrne, Micah Allard and Camdon Brien took third (8:09.24).

Andrew Byrne was fourth in the 1600.

Hollis Brookline’s Sam Bruneau took second in the 100 dash in 10.84 seconds and was fifth in the 200.

Milford’s foursome of Logan Korthals, Grant Skorupan, Will Whitley and Daniel Sixon took second in the 4×800 relay in 8:03.86.

Souhegan’s Taloosh Anderson was third in the 1600 in 4:24.82 and the Sabers foursome of John Katsel, Ben Gaudet, Brody Smith and Carson Behn was third in the 4×400 relay in 3:30.15.

Alvirne’s Shawn Boudreau took fifth in the discus.

GIRLS MEET

Nashua South’s Ross captured the 100 meter dash in 12.10 seconds (12.094), just ahead of teammate Nyah Musa (12.096). And the South foursome of Ross, Musa, Mimi Ortiz and Alejandra Chavarin captured the 4×100 relay in 48.06 seconds.

Nashua South’s Sarah Witta was fifth in the long jump and Ortiz was fifth in the 200.

Nashua North’s Thomas captured the 300 hurdles in 44.49 seconds. Thomas, along with Christina Juris, Laura White, and Allison Frye finished second behind Winnacunnet in the 4×400 relay in 4:07.89.

Nashua North’s Sarah Frye was third in the triple jump, while teammate Laura White took fourth in the 1600. The foursome of Juris, Tiana Brown, Allison Frye and Thomas was fifth in the 4×100. Allison Frye was also fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Alvirne’s Petrina Ofori took fifth in the 100 hurdles. Souhegan’s Samantha Swanbon was third in the 1600 in 5:12.46.
