PORTSMOUTH – Emotion? Plenty of it. Personal bests? You bet.

It was a day to remember for several local girls high school athletes at the Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Portsmouth High School.

The day ended in fabulous fashion, the same as it did a year ago at Salem as North’s 4×400 relay team of Christina Juris, Allison Frye, Sarah Frye and anchor Jhanelle Thomas finished first in 4:01.74. There was no one near Thomas when she crossed the finish line.

“Today was a stressful day, but we came through for the win,” Thomas said. “Everyone knew what they needed to do, and they came out here and they did it.”

The Titans took fourth with 53 points, behind third place Concord (65), second place and host Portsmouth (67) and the dominant track school of the day, Bedford, which totaled 106 points.

Nashua South had a good day in sixth with 45. Alvirne (18) was 10th while Bishop Guertin and Merrimack were 16th and 17th, respectively.

“Today for us especially went really really well,” North coach Renee Archer said. “We jumped up in some places, had a couple of disappointments, we were locked in for the 4×400, and we came out ready to work.”

Thomas was second in the 300 hurdles in 45.22, while Allison Frye was fourth. Thomas also took second in the 200 dash in 25.95 seconds.

North’s Sarah Frye was third in the triple jump at 34-11. Laura White was fourth in the 1600, Rosalie Neveu the same in the 800.Tiana Brown was fifth in the 100 hurdles.

North took third in the 4×100 relay with Christina Juris, Tiana Brown, Allison Frye and Thomas coming in at 49.58.

That was just behind South’s second place 48.99 with the foursome of Alejandra Chavarin, Soraya Ross, Mimi Ortiz and Nyah Musa.

The big story for Nashua South was Nyah Musa (12.28) and Soraya Ross (12.29) finiishing one-two in the 100 dash. Speed has always been the Panthers’ forte these last couple of seasons. Mimi Ortiz, unseeded in the 200, finished fourth in 26.35 with a personal best.

All of this pleased Panther mentor Catrina Lougee.

“We actually scored more points than projected today, so I am one very, very happy coach,” she said. “We had a few Prs (personal records) across the board, our throwers came and conquered and did better than expected. Soraya and Nyah going one-two in the 100 with lifetime bests was a big surprise. It’s nice to see those two back in full shape and full form right now.”

South’s Nora Gautieri was third in the shot put at 32-4. Sarah Witta was sixth in the long jump.

Alvirne’s Petrina Ofori was second in the high jump at 5-2, and Bishop Guertin’s Anna Fondakowski was fifth in the 3200.

Merrimack’s Mia Getchell was sixth in the shot put.
