HS Roundup: Merrimack, Milford baseball, HB, BG volleyball win

Wednesday was the busiest day of the young spring sports season, and teams that suffered a bit a year ago are smiling so far.

That includes the Merrimack and Milford High School baseball teams, which picked up wins yesterday. The ‘Hawks are 2-0 while it was the Spartans’ season opener.

Here’s a look at the day in baseball, lacrosse, tennis, track and boys volleyball:

BASEBALL

MERRIMACK 6, WINDHAM 2

The Tomahawks have another great game defeating the Jaguars on the road. Evan Sousa threw a complete game allowing five hits in seven innings and striking out six.

Garron Brown (double, single, three stolen bases, two runs) and Elliot Medlock (two doubles, two stolen bases, RBI) led the offense. Merrimack has their home opener on Friday against the Astros.

CONCORD 10, ALVIRNE 0

The Broncos got shut out by Concord at home. Craig Pedersen gave up two runs in four innings. Logan Orr, Michael Bebris, Max Francisco and Kyle Dufour all got in the hit column for the Broncos. Alvirne visits Goffstown on Friday.

MILFORD 1, PELHAM 0

The Spartans tallied two hits as they outlast the Pythons in the pitcher’s duel. Landon Pierce hit a bloop single to score the only run of the game and Harris Jones added the other hit. Bryce Larco got the win going five scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out five.

Milford visits Hollis Brookline on Monday.

SOFTBALL

GOFFSTOWN 16, NASHUA NORTH 2

The Titans got clawed by the Grizzlies in their home opener. North visits Winnacunnet on Friday.

EXETER 19, NASHUA SOUTH 2

The Panthers had a tough time on the road against the Blue Hawks, despite two RBIs by Caralynn Leblond. Cate Marvin took the loss in the circle for South, surrendering nine runs on nine hits in two innings.

South hosts Manchester West-Trinity on Monday.

WINDHAM 10, MERRIMACK 6

The Tomahawks, who won their opener the day before 15-9 over Dover, fell to 1-1 despit outhitting the Jags 11-9. Marissa Nelson and Lily Dionne each collected three hits, while Julia Hoag had two.

In their win on Tuesday, Merrimack took advantage of 10 walks. Marissa Nelson, who had multiple hits while Olivia Burke went 3 for 5, picked up the win in relief in the circle.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 14, SOUHEGAN 1

The Cavs opened the season in dominant fashion while visiting the Sabers. Kailey Disco struck out 12 and gave up two hits while pitching five innings. HB had impressive offensive play from Disco (two hits, two runs), Savannah Duquette (three hits, two RBIs), Olivia Colantuonio (two hits, two stolen bases, two runs), Katrina Lee (two hits) and Ava Imbrogno (triple).

HB visits Laconia and Souhegan hosts Plymouth on Friday.

PELHAM 7, MILFORD 5

The Spartans fall to the Pythons Wednesday afternoon. Haley Harrington and Alivia Mazzeo combined for seven strikeouts. Harrington and Mya Coombs each had three hits. Milford visits Hollis Brookline on Monday.

BOYS LACROSSE

ALVIRNE 7, NASHUA SOUTH 6

Brandon Lavarnway and Jon Santana each netted a hat trick as the Broncos kick away the Panthers. Ryan Tobin tallied a goal and Ayden Kelly made 22 saves in net. Alvirne hosts Merrimack Valley and South visits Londonderry on Friday.

COE-BROWN 16, MILFORD 3

The Spartans open the season with a big loss to Coe-Brown. Braydon Atwood score two goals and Ryan Arseneau added one. Braedon Orlen tallied an assist and Brennan Cassidy collected 10 saves in his first lacrosse game. Milford hosts Plymouth on Monday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 3, FARMINGTON 0

The Cardinals get their first win of the season with the scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-20. Felix Hoffman (eight kills), Sean Schultz (15 assists), Michael McLaughlin (five aces) and Martin Dormer (eight digs) had great performances for the locals. BG hosts Pinkerton on Thursday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3, JOHN STARK 0

The two-time defending champion Cavaliers are now 2-0 following the 25-14, 25-9, 25-21 sweep.

Top performers were HB were junior Ethan Norris (five kills, seven aces), Matteo Morell (three kills, three blocks) and Jacob Toupin (three kills).

HB is at Souhegan for a 5 p.m. match on Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 9, MERRIMACK 0

The Panthers dominated in singles, with wins by Abhinav Avvaru (8-0), Shrey Shah (8-0), Mihir Garimella (8-2), Aadi Kulkarni (8-2), Raghav Buddhineni (8-2), Samarth Chetan (8-3).

Avvaru and Ishaan Parmar won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Shah/Dylan Jiang won 8-4 at No. 2. Merrimack’s Lucas Goldberg and Feliz Rattunde gave Divyesh Gaddam/Vihaan Shah all they could handle before falling 9-8 at No. 3.

NASHUA NORTH 7, SPAULDING 2

Rudra Patel, Jack Desjardins, Navein Shribalaharan and Domingo Reynoso all won, and the Titans got a boost when Addy Veremderan/EbuckaStanley got their first ever doubles victory

PINKERTON 6, BISHOP GUERTIN 3

The Cards split singles but dropped all three doubles matches to fall to 0-2.

Winners for Guertin included Jack Kostansek at No. 1 (8-4), Jaime Gomez-Herrera at No. 3 (8-4) and Jonny Perrott at No. 4 (8-5).

ALVIRNE 9, SALEM 0

The Broncos got their first win of the season, with singles victories by Sam Hergenhahn (8-4), Zack Proulx (8-2), Caleb Lambert (8-4), Sean Mendes (8-2), Dylan Burke (8-4), and Joey Allison (8-0).

Doubles went the same way with Proulx/Lambert (8-6), Hergenhan/Mendes (8-1) and Burke/Allison (9-7) coming out on top.

SOUHEGAN 7, MILFORD 0

The Sabers cruised to their first win of the season, with wins by Brian Goddard (8-3), Ryan Fernandez (8-2), Connor Firmin (8-1), Keegan Beatty (8-2), Balthazar Grover (8-0), and Jackson Hipp (8-2). Goddard and Fernandez won at No. 1 doubles 8-3, and the final two doubles matches were not played due to rain.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 9, CONVAL 0

The Cavaliers improved to 3-0, dropping just two games in the entire match.

Wins were by, in order on the ladder, Arjn Inakollu (8-0), Sam Anthony (8-0), John Torpey (8-0), Dylan Legrow (8-1), and Greyson McSeverney (8-0).

The doubles teams of Anthony/Inakollu (8-0) and Torpey Mazzola (8-1) also triumphed. The No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles were not played (forfeit).

GIRLS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 6, MERRIMACK 2

Winners for the Panthers included Piya Chokshi at No. 2 (8-1), Krina Dani (8-2), Hannah Jacob (9-8, 8-5 tiebreaker), Riya Shroff (8-3) and Gowri Akkineni (8-2).

Merrimack took No. 1 doubles with Katie Costa/Jess Hardin winning 8-2, and Soha Patel/Akkineni won a shortened No. 3 doubles 6-2. The No. 2 doubles match was wiped out by rain with the match tied 3-3 and Merrimack won in a forfeit at No. 1 singles due to an injury.

BISHOP GUERTIN 6, PINKERTON 3

Guertin got four singles wins by Jaclyn Krsciunas (8-5), Lydia Miller (8-2), Ina Kemme (8-2) and Arsa Sachit (9-8, 8-6 tiebreaker), and won Nos. 2 and 3 doubles (Krisciunas/Miller, 8-1 and Kemme/Arisa Rain 6-1).

SALEM 7, ALVIRNE 2

The Blue Devils took five of six singles to clinch things. Alvirne’s winners were Alana Girous at No. 5, 8-4 and the doubles team of Zailyn O’Leary/Lily Belmore, 9-7. Alvirne hosts Londonderry on Friday, weather permitting.

SOUHEGAN 8, MILFORD 1

The Sabers are now 2-0 as the zipped through singles with wins by Ori Dart (8-2), Sophia Yates (8-3), Amanda Leary (8-2), Keelin Lewellyn (8-2), Callie Hycuna (8-0), and Callie Russell (8-1).

Dart/LeJubinvale/Hycuna did at No. 3 8-2. Milford’s lone win came from Claire Cote and Jocelyn Shaw at No. 2 doubles, 7-5.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

NORTH BOYS WIN, GIRLS SECOND, ALVIRNE THIRD

The Titan boys picked up a tri-meet win with 67 points, ahead of Pinkerton (59) and Alvirne (52).

North’s Gavin Suchecki took the high jump at 5-8 and triple jump at 37-6. Darius Smith won the shot put at 49-1 and the discus at 140-5. The Titans’ other winners were Aaron McNair (800, 2:08.00), Kobe Perry (200, 23.75) and the 4×400 relay team of Yaxiel Vazquez, McNair, Peter Donovan and Suchecki in 3:41.72.

Alvirne’s Ashton Rowe won the 1600 in 5:07.64 and Shane Plumley took the 400 in 52.32. Joey Marcotte captured the 300 hurdles in 42.82. Jacob Plante won the 3200 in 11:00.63.

In the girls meet, North edged Alvirne 49-48 for second while Pinkerton won with 74 points.

North winners included Allie Dandeneaux in the long jump (14-3), Jhanelle Thomas in the 100 (12.69) and

Rosalie Neveu in the 400 (1:08.56),

Allison Frye, Tiana Brown, Christina Juris and Thomas captured the 4×100 relay in 50.22

Alvirne’s Petrina Ofori had a great day as she won the high jump at 4-10, the 100 hurdles in 15.94 seconds, and the 300 hurdles in 49.64.

Other Bronco wins came from Lisa Amadi in the triple jump (29-3), Samantha Da Silva in the javelin (77-2)
