HS Roundup: BG, Merrimack boys hockey teams triumph

It was a mixed bag for local high school boys hockey teams on Saturday.

Bishop Guertin and Merrimack yay, but Nashua North-Souhegan and Alvirne-Milford nay.

Meanwhile, there were some good local performances in the final regular season indoor track meets as tuneups for next Sunday’s state championships.

Here’s your Saturday highs and lows:

BOYS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 1, BOW 0

The Cardinals (8-3-1) survived the tough Falcons (7-5) with a second period unassisted goal by Aidan Kelley.

BG will face Bedford on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Saint Anselm’s Sullivan Arena.

MERRMACK 5, WINNACUNNET 2

Trailing 2-1 after one period, Jackon Woods scored the tying goal and Conor Dunn the go-ahead goal, both in the second period in a showdown of two of Division II’s top teams at West Side Arena.

Eliot Medlock scored two clinching goals in the third period for the ‘Hawks (9-2, four straight wins) while Will Farrell had a goal and an assist.

Other assists on the day went to Dunn and Joey Raymond.

James Brew played well in goal for Merrimack, which is at Spaulding on Wednesday. Winnacunnet fell to 10-2.

SALEM 7, NASHUA NORTH-SOUHEGAN 2

The Saber-Titans dropped their third straight, falling to 4-6, managing only goals by Callen Cullity and Nate D’Silva at the Salem Icenter.

N-S heads to Skate 3 on Monday night to face Alvirne-Milford.

OYSTER RIVER 3, ALVIRNE-MILFORD 2

The host Admirals fell to 5-6-1 despite a goal and assist by Braydon Atwood and a Bryce Larco goal in Tyngsborough, Mass.

Alvirne-Milford will host Nashua North-Souhegan Monday night at 7:50 at Skate 3.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

NASHUA SOUTH BOYS, GIRLS DO WELL

The Nashua South boys and girls had a good day at UNH in the afternoon session(non-team Scoring) that also included locals Bishop Guertin and Alvirne, as Dante Castellano captured the 1500 meter run and Michael Menezes, Ryan Jansen, Marcell Perry and Ethan Schnyer combined to win the 4×160 in 1:15.06, just .75 off the school record. The Panthers also got a 4×400 relay win via Micah Allard, Camdon Brien,Sergio Lopez and Barion Perry.

Schnyer was second in the 300,Elyza Mercado same in the shot put and the Panthers were second in the 4×800.

For Bishop Guertin, Divine Uzuyem captured the high jump at 6-0, while Malik Ogbunamiri was second in the 55 dash and Noah Guarrera same in the 600.

Alvirne’s Joey Marcotte was second in the 55 hurdles, and Shane Plumley was fourth in the 300.

In the girls meet, South’s Nyah Musia captured the 55 dash in 7.25 seconds and the 300 in 44.37. The Panthers were second in all three relays, as was Sarah Witta in the long jump and Nora Gautieri in the shot put.

Alvirne’s Ava Martin won the 1000 in 3:11.87, while Bronco Petrina Ofori was second the 55 hurdles and third in the 300 and high jump.

Bishop Guertin’s Anna Fondakowski was second in the 1500, Anna Sinclair was third in the 600.

NORTH, MERRIMACK COMPETE

In the afternoon session at Phillips Exeter, Nashua North’s Darius Smith captured the shot put at 51-11.75, while the Titans 4×400 relay team was second in the boys meet.

In the girls competition (no team scoring), North’s Jhanelle Thomas won the 300 in 42.20 as well as the 55 hurdles in 7.95. Laura White was third in the 1500 and Tiana Brown third in the hurdles.

Merrimack’s Alexis Best took the 55 meter dash in 7.27 seconds as well as the long jump (17-4.5). Melanie Bedard was third in the 1000

MILFORD, HOLLIS BROOKLINE, SOUHEGAN DO WELL

The Spartan boys got a win by Daniel Sixon in the 1000 (2:38.54) while the Spartans were second in the 4×400 relay.

The Cavaliers also competed in the morning (non-team scoring) session at UNH, as Sam Bruneau was third in the 55 and 300, and Andrew Sesmarais had two third (high jump, long jump)

Souhegan’s Owen Stine took third in the 1000 while Cole Henderson was second in the 55 hurdles.

In the girls meet Milford’s Keely Giordano was second in the 55

HB was second in the 4×800 relay.

WRESTLING

BISHOP GUERTIN DROPS TWO

The Cardinals fell to Bedford, 42-24, and Pinkerton, 45-27, in a tri-match.

Austin Steinruck (106) and Sam Ronzio (175) won two matches, while single winners were Jack Kaler (120), James Algeo (132), Jack Foster (150) and Bishop Kearns (285).
