Brawlin’: Landry’s four goals lift N-S; Kings edge ‘Hawks
NASHUA — It was a good day Wednesday for the Nashua High School North and South co-op hockey teams in the first day of the Hollis Brookline Backyard Brawl at Conway Arena.
The North-Souhegan and South-Pelham teams each got wins, and left the rink with 2.5 points in the tourney. Ironically, Alvirne-Milford had the best day by not playing, picking up the full three-points with a forfeit by Monadnock-Fall Mountain-ConVal, which pulled out of the event Tuesday.
The highlight of the day? Four goals by Saber-Titan Jacob Landry.
Here’s the rundown on today’s games:
NASHUA NORTH-SOUHEGAN 5, HBDS 1
Nashua North-Souhegan ice hockey head coach Chris Zarlenga was not happy with how his team played in the first half against Hollis-Brookline-Derryfield. Despite outshooting the Warriors 19-6, Zarlenga’s team went into halftime tied 1-1. The Saber-Titans were called for three penalties and failed to score on multiple breakaways.
“We came out flat-footed after four days off unfortunately,” Zarlenga said. “That first period was not what this team stands for. The effort was not there. We solved it in the second and that’s what matters.”
NNH came out shooting at will once again to open the second half, only this time they were able to find the back of the net. Senior Chase McBride gave the Saber-Titans a 2-1 lead two minutes into the second on a shot from the right circle thanks to a pass from junior Jevon Anson
The Warriors struggled to build any momentum into the second half and managed only five shots on net.
With 8:21 left in the game, NNS’s Jacob Landry decided to put the game out of reach for the Warriors. He put the Saber-Titans up 3-1 on a wrap-around goal for his second score of the game. Eleven seconds later he got his hat trick on a wrist shot from the left circle. He closed out the game with his fourth goal in front of the goalie after a HBDS turnover in their own zone.
“He’s fun to watch isn’t he? He’s phenomenal,” Zarlenga said. “Besides the talent, I’d take his heart and put in anyone out there. That kid works as hard as anyone I’ve seen.”
Junior Natalie Duncan was the lone goal scorer for the Warriors. She redirected a shot from Ben Hazard that got by NNS goalie Zack Veilleux, who finished with 10 saves on the night. HBDS goalie Rachel Irving was facing shots all game as she stopped 33 shots on net.
NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 2, MERRIMACK 1
The Kings jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead on two power play goals 2:38 apart to get the win.The first was by Gavin Asimakopulos, assisted by Broden Landsteiner at 11:55 and the second was by Cam Croke, assisted by Andrew Byrne at 9:17.
Merrimack cut the gap to 2-1 with 18 seconds left in the half on a goal by Conor Dun, assisted by Brayden Guagliumi.
But it wasn’t enough, as the teams played to a scoreless second half. Kings goalie Ethan Robinson had 19 saves in net while Merrimack’s James Brew had 28, including 20 in the second half.
