The local fall high school season has come to a close.

And with these cold temperatures, perhaps it’s fitting that the winter season gets started in a few sports today as wrestling, swimming and bowling teams are eligible to begin practice/tryouts today.

The fall campaign closes with four local state championships: Hollis Brookline girls soccer in Division II, Campbell boys soccer in Division III, Nashua South boys cross country in Division I and in the Meet of Champions overall, and the Souhegan golf team in Division III.

Local football teams went 0 for 4 over the weekend, while the Nashua South boys cross country team finished seventh at the New England Regional cross country championships to highlight the local effort in that event in Maine.

It was a tough weekend on the gridiron. On Friday night, Nashua High School North was blanked by Portsmouth-Oyster River on the road, 20-0, while Bishop Guertin was beaten by top ranked Pinkerton Academy 55-20 in Derry, both in the Division I quarterfinals.

Things did not get any better on Saturday. At Souhegan High School’s Calvetti Field, top ranked Campbell suffered its lone loss of the season, spotting Trinity of Manchester a 21-0 lead en route to a 42-12 defeat in the Division III championship game. It was a rematch of last year’s final won by the Cougars, but not this time.

However, ironically, while that game was going on, the toughest loss of the weekend had to be the No. 3 Souhegan Sabers falling in the final couple of minutes, 21-20, to No. 2 Plymouth at Plymouth.

While the local season is over, the NHIAA football season still has four games left to play. The Division II final will take place at Nashua’s Stellos Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. with top ranked, defending champion Pelham facing No. 2 Plymouth.

In Division I, there are three games left: The semifinals either Friday night or Saturday afternoon as No. 1 Pinkerton hosts arch rival No. 4 Londonderry, and No. 2 Portsmouth-Oyster River hosts No. 3 Bedford in a battle of 10-0 teams.

The finals will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 at a site and time to be determined. That will be the final event of the NHIAA’s fall sports season, but locally it is done.
