Whether it’s a few days’ rest, or a game the night before, the Bishop Guertin High School field hockey team rarely feels unprepared.
That was evident Thursday night as the Cardinals defeated the Merrimack Tomahawks 5-1 at Stellos Stadium. They improved to 6-2 in notching their third straight win, and second in two days.
“We’ve had a few back-to-back games thus far, so tonight was routine,” Cards coach Dakota Bilodeau said. We’re fortunate to have a deep team and fresh legs that can help us recover.”
Taylor Guibord and Emiley Vinciguerra led the Cardinal offense, each contributing two goals apiece. Guibord started the scoring early on, with a pass from Jordan Gaebel about halfway into the first quarter. Vinciguerra’s goal at the end of the second quarter maintained the momentum as BG led 2-0 at the half. Guibord assisted Addison Daddona for another goal only a minute into the third, putting them up by three and securing the lead.
“We got to see everybody today which is always a plus, especially when they step up and do their job. … No matter the context, we tell everyone to be ready to have their number called, and today everyone was,” Bilodeau said.
Despite their sixth straight loss, Merrimack head coach Kristen Peterson was pleased with her team’s persistence. “We called a timeout to try and gather our thoughts and composure, and that’s exactly what the ladies did.”
Most of BG’s goals came in the third quarter, but Peterson noted the 1-7 team’s improved ball possession and teamwork in the second half.
“Their ability to work as one and score late-game displayed their sheer determination regardless of the outcome,” she said.
Merrimack goaltenders Cam Bellen and Anabelle Cassetty combined for 17 saves as both faced a lot of Cardinal pressure. Merrimack’s only goal scorer was Ava Martin with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter.
Bishop Guertin looks to extend their win streak against Concord at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Rivier University’s Joanne Merrill Field. Merrimack, however, has nearly a full week to prepare for its next game against Timberlane next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
