HS Roundup: ‘Hawks football wins first; South takes North Invitational

It was a busy Saturday morning, noon and night with local high school teams, who made use of the entire day, starting with good news for Merrimack football in the morning, as well as the Nashua South boys cross country team in the North Invitational race. It was even good news for the BG soccer teams.

FOOTBALL
MERRIMACK 28, GOFFSTOWN 8
The Tomahawks tasted victory for the first time this season. QB Sahil Mujawar tosded two touchdowns, one to Logan Day and another to Aiden Centralla.
Garron Brown also had two TD runs for the ‘Hawks, now 1-2 and headed back to Stellos Stadium next Saturday to take on Bishop Guertin.
BOYS SOCCER
BISHOP GUERTIN 2, TIMBERLANE 2
It wasn’t a win, but the Cards (0-5-1) managed to avoid a sixth setback with goals by Rayaan Hameed and Trenton Cormier. The tough part was the Owls, also winless, scored with about five minutes left but that didn’t take away from another exceptional performance by BG keeper Beau Baughter (eight saves).
Carson Leo returned to the team and played well, along with Josh Corrieau and Alex Haigt.
BG is at Manchester Memorial on Tuesday night.
GIRLS SOCCER
BISHOP GUERTIN 3, PINKERTON 1
The Cards got back on track to improve to 4-1 with two goals by Zoe Horton-Sousa and a goal and assist by Martha Lord. Other assists went to Alyson Guerette and Ava Suech.
BG is at Londonderry on Tuesday.
BOYS & GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
SOUTH BOYS TAKE NORTH INVITATIONAL, NORTH GIRLS FOURTH
In the boys event, the Panthers totaled 63 points to capture the event at Mines Falls, while Bishop Guertin was the next best local in seventh at 159. Merrimack (313) was 11th, Alvinre 12th (346) and host North 13th (372).
Guertin’s Matthew Giardina took top individual honors in 15:09.20. Nashua South’s victory was paced by Daniel Byrne (15:41.08) in fourth and Dante Castellano (15:45.57) in sixth. The Panthers Cam Patronick and Andrew Byrne were 12th-13th and Ryan DuVarney 28th.
Guertin’s Carson Fischer was eighth (15:58.24) and Sam Prescott 23rd. Cole Burns led North in 20th.
In the girls race, North was the top local in fourth with 141 points, behind winner Hanover (42), second place Pinkerton (45) and Bedford in third (63).
Bishop Guertin finished sixth (173), Merrimack eighth (255), Nashua South ninth (275) and Alvirne 10th (277). Hollis Brookline rounded out the locals in 12th.
Anna Fondakowski of BG was the top local finisher in 10th (19:28.39) and her fellow Cardinal Lyla Masson was next in the team scoring in 27th. Melanie Bedard of Merrimack was 13th (19:42.03).
The Titans top scorer was Annika Hayden in 18th (20:16.67) while Laura White was 20th and Sonya Witkoskie 33rd.
Emily Melendez was Nashua South’s top finisher in 24th.
