MILFORD — Last week, the Souhegan Sabers needed four quarters to put up 53 points. This week they only needed a half to score 39. Led by a masterful performance by Romy Jain, who threw four touchdowns and rushed for another, the Sabers took down the Milford Spartans 39-0 in a weather-shortened game that ended after halftime.
After getting their game pushed back from Friday due to lightning storms and transportation issues, the Sabers (2-0) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, knowing that inclement weather was on its way. On the opening kickoff, Ryland Raudelunas returned the ball 90 yards to the endzone to give Souhegan the early lead 7-0.
Milford (0-2) managed to get three plays off before lightning was spotted and the game was delayed for about an hour.
When the teams return it was clear the Sabers had all control of the entire game. Souhegan’s Brayden Hickman recovered a Milford fumble on the first play after the break. That turnover allowed Souhegan to start in Spartan territory and ended with Jain finding Cole Manning in the corner of the endzone for the touchdown.
Jain would find Manning for another touchdown in the second quarter. It was another stellar performance for the junior, who finished with 177 passing yards on 10-14 passing. Manning finished with four catches for 30 yards.
Another lightning delay at the end of the first quarter pushed the start of the second quarter back another hour. Once again, the Spartans looked flat returning to the field. On the third play of the drive, quarterback Harris Jones completed a pass to Kadyn Tessier for what have been a big gain, but instead the ball was fumbled and Milford lost the possession to the Sabers.
With Jain airing the ball out, the Sabers did not rely on JJ Bright as much but the senior running back still make his presence known.
