HS Roundup: Cavs open with win; South boys soccer falls

The high school season is now in full swing, and that means we’ve heard from the Hollis Brookline girls volleyball team, Division I finalists the last three years. Nothing looks easy this year for any volleyball team, and the Cavaliers struggled to win a five-set match vs. Goffstown.

You can say the same about a lot of high school soccer, as the Nashua South boys suffered their first loss of the season at Windham.

Here’s your Friday rundown:

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3, GOFFSTOWN 2

The Cavs defeat the Grizzlies 25-20, 15-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-13. Standouts for HB were Annette Schlunk (eight kills, three aces), Kate Berrigan (eight kills, two blocks), Maggie Noble (nine kills), Maia Schneider (17 digs) and Gwynn Thomas (18 assists).

HB visits Bedford on Wednesday in a regular season rematch of the last three Division I finals.

CONCORD 3, BISHOP GUERTIN 2

The Cardinals rallied to force a fifth set in their season opener with a loss to Concord by the scores of 14-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-15, 11-15. Playing well for BG were Akira Coravos, Brooke Partridge, Veronica Gomez and Bella Nutting. BG hosts Pinkerton on Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER

WINDHAM 3, NASHUA SOUTH 1

The Panthers receive their first loss of the season after Friday’s loss to the Jaguars. Leo Lopez scored the locals lone goal. South hosts Alvirne on Tuesday.

EXETER 5, ALVIRNE 0

The Broncos get shutout for the second straight contest. Alvirne visits Nashua South on Tuesday.

OYSTER RIVER 3, SOUHEGAN 0

The Sabers fall to a stout Oyster River squad on Friday. Finnegan Daly made three saves. Souhegan visits Milford on Tuesday.

MILFORD 5, SANBORN 0

Avery Wilson found the back of the net four times in the Spartans dominant win. Aidan Loughran scored one goal. Milford hosts Souhegan on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

BISHOP GUERTIN 4, WINNACUNNET 0

The Cardinals got their second straight shutout win to start the season at 3-0. Zoe Horton-Sousa, Kelsey Ackerman, Emerson Brown and Ava Suech each scored. BG takes on Nashua South on Wednesday at Stellos Stadium.

EXETER 6, ALVIRNE 0

The Broncos fall to the Blue Hawks for their third straight shutout loss. Alvirne hosts Nashua South on Tuesday.

OYSTER RIVER 1, SOUHEGAN 0

The Sabers lose a tough battle with Oyster River resulting in their third consecutive loss. Souhegan visits Laconia on Tuesday.

FIELD HOCKEY

PEMBROKE 4, MILFORD 1

Amanda Faria scored the Spartans lone goal with an assist from Willa Audley. Violet Renda made nine saves. Milford visits ConVal on Tuesday.
