HS Roundup: Cougars enjoy soccer rout; locals fall in field hockey

It was a light day to begin the first full week of high school sports action, but don’t tell the Campbell High School boys soccer team that, as the Cougars enjoyed a rout in opening their season in thunderous fashion.
It was not that great, however, for local field hockey teams as Nashua South, Nashua North and Merrimack fell by a combined 17-2 margin.
Here’s a look at the first official Fall Monday:
BOYS SOCCER
CAMPBELL 8, HILLSBORO-DEERING 0
Junior Luke Delia and sophomore Nate Roche each had a hat trick and an assist to each other in the Cougars’ season opener. Jack Bourque, another junior, had the shutout in the Campbell net.
Campbell hosts Monadnock on Friday.
FIELD HOCKEY
EXETER 7, NASHUA SOUTH 1
The Panthers’ lone goal was scored by Erin Flaherty, off a pass from Emily Richard. Xiadani DeLaLima had 16 saves in net for the Panthers, who also got good play from Maren Lowell, Karina O’Donnell and Roseanne Shiju.
South hosts Keene on Wednesday.
SALEM 3, NASHUA NORTH 0
Some feel the Blue Devils may be a tourney contender this year, and the Titans played them tough in their season opener at Stellos Stadium.
North will visit Dover on Wednesday.
KEENE 7, MERRIMACK 1
It was a tough 2023 opener coming off a tough 2022 season for the visiting Tomahawks, spoiling the debut of new coach Kristen Peterson. Merrimack hosts Concord on Wednesday.
