A magical season was capped off in record style on Saturday.
Just over two weeks after setting a state Division I meet record, the Nashua High School South girls 4×100 relay team sprinted to first place in the New England Championships at Bangor, Me.
The fast foursome of Mimi Ortiz, Iyana Braswell, Mia Cruz and Soraya Ross captured the regional title in 48.43 seconds.
The Fantastic Four of the spring outdoor track season was unbeaten. They now hold the school and state record at 48.4.
“Together, they were unstoppable,” South coach Catrina Lougee said. “What started out as a goal to break the 1989 Nashua High record of 48.8 turned into a record-breaking season. Every time they were doubted in the regular season, they showed up.”
It was a good day for locals. Also for South, Braswell was tied for third in the long jump at 18-2.75 while Ross was also eighth in the 100 dash (12.39).
In other very notable performances Nashua North’s Mardy Novak was second in the javelin at 123-09 and 22nd in the discus, while Titan teammate Jhanelle Thomas was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 44.66 seconds. She was also 19th in the 200 meter dash.

South’s Ethan Schnyer was 16th in the 200 and the Panthers were 14th in the 4×800 relay. Panther Antonio Martinez was 17th in the shot put.
Nashua North’s Darius Smith was 17th in the discus,
Merrimack’s Tyler Safstrom was 21st in the 800, Nick Marcotte 23rd in the 1600, and Hollis Brookline’s Marcus Mccammack 22nd in the triple jump.
Bishop Guertin’s Spencer Matarrazzo was 24th in the javelin.
But the story of the day belonged to South’s record relay team.
