Tuesday was a great day for two Hollis Brookline teams, but not the third.
The No. 4 Cavaliers fell to No. 1, unbeaten Kingswood, 5-4 in the Division II softball semifinals at Plymouth State University, despite a 16-strikeout performance by pitcher Austyn Kump.
The walk-off loss snaps HB’s 10-game winning streak as they finish the season at 16-4. Kingswood (18-0) moves on to face No. 2 Coe-Brown on Saturday for the title. Coe-Brown downed John Stark 5-3 in the other semifinal.
The Cavs, though, were geared up for the upset and led 4-0 at one point, holding the lead until the sixth when the Knights took the lead.
HB racked up eight hits in the game, as Kump and Emily Tebbetts had two hits each. Kailey Disco had an RBI while Tebbetts knocked in the other three runs.
Kump surrendered five runs on six hits over six innings.
BOYS TENNIS SINGLES
Bishop Guertin’s No. 2 seed Nick Xie fell to Lebanon’s top seeded Nolan Arado, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals of the NHIAA Boys Singles tournament.
Xie, a junior out of Acton, Mass., had bested Bedford’s Lucas Mack, the third seed, 7-6, 6-4. Xie’s only other loss this season was a default due to an academic committment in a regular season match last month.
