Bishop Guertin High School boys tennis coach Tom Lizotte had a good feeling heading into the unknown vs. Dover in Thursday’s Division I quarterfinals.

His instincts were right, as the No. 5 Cardinals eased past the No. 4 Green Wave, 7-2, to reach the semifinals and date with 15-0, top seeded Bedford on Monday at 4 p.m.

Unfortunately, the same good feeling Nashua South coach Sam Kluger had heading up to Hanover didn’t pan out as the Panthers’ season came to a 5-4 end.

Elsewhere, the season ended for both the Hollis Brookline and Souhegan boys teams, plus the Nashua North girls.

The Cards (13-3) wrapped things up in singles, taking five of the six matches. No. 1 Nick Xie (8-3), No. 2 Gavin Bombara (8-5), No. 3 Will Moynihan (8-3), No. 4 Sean Cairns (8-4) and No. 5 Aditya Prasad (9-9, 8-6 tiebreaker) got the job done to push Guertin into the semis.

In doubles, Xie/Bombara (8-6) and Moynihan/Cairns (8-4) accounted for the final with wins.

Now the Cards will have their hands full on Monday. Their three losses are all to the top three seeds: Bedford, Hanover and Derryfield.

What needs to change?

“The hardest part is when they start to play really good players, they try to do much too much,” Lizotte said of his team. “They try to win the point way to early. Where they can rally with these guys, they see it, and say ‘Oh, maybe I should hit a winner now’ instead of working the point.

“I try to tell them, hit the ball four times. Get the ball over the net four times you’ll win the point. Second shot, you don’t need to hit a winner. … That’s my biggest concern, staying consistent, keeping the rallies going.”

NO. 2 HANOVER 5, NO. 7 NASHUA SOUTH 4

The Panthers certainly had their chances to advance to the semis and potential rematch with No. 3 Derryfield after splitting singles with the Bears. But they dropped two of three doubles to end their season.

South controlled the top of the singles ladder with wins by Abhinav Avvaru at No. 1 (8-4), No. 2 Atul Phadke (8-1) and No. 3 Ansh Khanna (8-4). But Hanover’s Henry Werna, Ian Holmes and Alex Orsino won the bottom half (Nos. 4-6) to put things on doubles.

And there, Nashua (11-5) managed just one win, by No. 1 Avvaru/Phadke 8-1.

“Tough one,” Panthers coach Sam Kluger said. “They just had too much depth.”

DIVISION II

NO. 2 BOW 9, NO. 7 SOUHEGAN 0

The Sabers season comes to an end at 7-8 while the Falcons move on to the semifinals. Bow will host No. 3 Oyster River on Monday.

NO. 1 LEBANON 9, NO. 8 HOLLIS BROOKLINE 0

HB’s Sam Anthony and Arjun Inakollu played well in doubles in a close 9-7 loss.

The Cavs season ends at 6-10. Lebanon (14-1) hosts No. 4 Portsmouth Monday in the semis.
