HS Roundup: North teams third at Merrimack; BG lax rolls

The weather warms up when the big track meets begin, right? Like clockwork.

Thus the Merrimack Invitational went of in great conditions on Thursday. The only problem is no local schools won it, as Pinkerton had a boy-girl sweep.

Still there were plenty of great performances. Also, in other sports, BG boys tennis bounced back, Milford baseball snapped a small losing streak and the Hollis Brookline girls lacrosse team won its eighth straight.

We’ll start with the track meet and go from there:

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

MERRIMACK INVITATIONAL

NASHUA NORTH THIRD IN BOYS, GIRLS

In the boys meet, the Astros managed 96 points while Coe-Brown was second at 67, and North and Portsmouth wer tied for third at 51. Nashua South was sixth at 42.

North’s Jack Sullivan set a school record in the 300 hurdles (39.58) in finishing second and won the triple jump at 42-4.

Titan Darius Smith continued his great spring with a win in the shot put, was second in the discus. North’s Gavin Suckecki set the school freshman record in the high jump.

South’s Rory Olsen also had a good day, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sami Witta was second in the high jump, and Dante Castellano was third in the 3200.

Souhegan’s Cole Henderson was second in the 110 hurdles.

The Astros edged Concord 100-98 in the girls meet, with North (81) third, South fourth (42) and host Merrimack sixth (35).

North’s Jhanelle Thomas captured the 200 and 400 meters; Isabella Di Vernieri was second in the 300 hurdles, Sarah Witkoskie was third in the 3200, Kelechie Okori third in the high jump, Mardy Novak won the javelin, took third in the shot and second in the discus.

For South, Iyana Braswell won the 100 and Soraya Ross was second in the 200.

Braswell, Ross, Mia Cruz and Mimi Ortiz won the 4×100 relay.

Merrimack’s Alexis Best took the triple jump at 38-8.

BASEBALL

PINKERTON 6, NASHUA NORTH 4

The Titans dropped a tough but tight game against the defending Division I champions at Holman Stadium, falling to 7-5.

North is at Trinity on Monday.

MILFORD 6, LACONIA 3

Landon Bianchi earned the win for the Spartans (5-6, three game skid snapped) giving up the three Sachem runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one. Bryce Larco tossed an inning of relief for the save.

Colin Williams, Trice Cote, Larco, Sean Daykin, Bianchi and Howard (three RBIs) all had hits to pace the Milford offense.

The Spartans host Souhegan on Monday.

SOFTBALL

WINNACUNNET 6, MERRIMACK 0

The ‘Hawks offense managed just four hits. Merrimack’s Avery Hui gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings, but went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.

Lily Dionne allowed two runs on two hits in relief while going 1 for 3. Marissa Nelson had Merrimack’s only other hit.

PINKERTON 12, NASHUA NORTH 0 (5 innings)

The Titans played with just eight players and were mercy-ruled. Pitcher Hope Blondin fanned five in five innings while Nicki Gates, Juliette Swisher and Sam Small all hit singles.

WILTON LYNDEBOROUGH 9, PORTSMOUTH CHRISTIAN 7

Ryleigh Smith led the Warriors to the win going 3 for 3 with two triples, while Ella Morris also had two triples and Kay Miller tossed a complete game.

BOYS LACROSSE

BISHOP GUERTIN 20, CONCORD 2

The Cards improved to 10-2, with Cale Yeung, Brady Dumont, Connor Guibord ,Bobby Canaway, Emerson Warren, Jacob Caron, Alex Dumont, Aiden Laurendeau, and Noah Zeman all getting goals.

BG is at Dover on Monday.

SOUHEGAN 13, GOFFSTOWN 6

Cole Manning had four goals to lead the Sabers, who got a hat trick from A.J. Hawkes while Josh Dupuis paced the defense.

Now 6-4, Souhegan is at ConVal today.

KEARSARGE 10, MILFORD 1

The Spartans’ lone goal was by Matt Duby, while James Brew had 20 first half saves in goal and Harris Jones four in the second half.

Milford (0-10) hosts Trinity today.

GIRLS LACROSSE

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 19, KEENE-MONADNOCK 6

Paige Mello had a great day for the Cavaliers (10-2, eight straight) with six goals, eight draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground ball controls.

Cailean Roy (five goals, two assists, two draws), Alyssa Hill (four goals, two assists), Sabrina Hill (two goals, three assists), Bella Haytayan (two goals) and Samantha Smith (assist) all contributed to the scoring.

Daniella Allanach and Juliette Ogren also had two draw controls while Addy Daugherty had eight saves in net.

HB is at ConVal on Monday.

LONDONDERRY 18, NASHUA NORTH 1

The shorthanded Titans, who had several freshmen in the lineup, were the victims of the 3-10 Lancers snapping a five-game losing streak.

North (1-10) hosts Concord on Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

BISHOP GUERTIN 7, NASHUA NORTH 2

The Cardinals bounced back from their first loss by taking five of six singles from their local rivals

They had to default at No. 1 singles – BG’s Nick Xie had an academic commitment – but BG got wins from Gavin Bombara (8-3), Will Moynihan (8-6), Sean Cairns (8-2), Aditya Prasad (8-3) and Sean Finnegan (8-4).

Bombara/Moynihan (8-3) and Cairns/Prasad (8-2) won for BG at No.1 and 2 doubles. North got a win at No. 3 doubles by Navein Sribalaharan/Domingo Reynoso (8-3). Also for the Titans, Jackson Nardone played well at No. 3 singles in his 8-6 loss.

BG is at Hanover Tuesday while North (4-8) is at Salem next Wednesday.

HANOVER 6, NASHUA SOUTH 3

The two teams resumed their suspended match and the Panthers saw their eight match winning streak snapped.

South got wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles by Abhinav Avvaru (8-5) and Atul Phadke (8-1), and the two combined for a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

Hanover improved to 8-1 while the 8-2 Panthers host Pinkerton today.

LEBANON 9, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 0

The Cavaliers fell to 5-7, while the Raiders are a Division II contender and improved to 10-1.

HB is at Bow on Monday.

GOFFSTOWN 7, SOUHEGAN 2

The Sabers fell to 4-7, getting only one singles win, that by Philip Dodge at No. 2 (8-4), and doubles win by Parker Shade/Balthazar Glover, 8-2.

The Sabers are at Kingswood today.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 3, MASCENIC 1

The Cards improved to 3-6, getting the clincher in the fourth set, 25-22. BG won the first two sets 25-22, 25-18 before Mascenic managed a 25-22 win.

Guertin is at Timberlane today.
