HS Roundup: North girls win tennis Battle; South, BG win
The Battle of the Bridge usually never fails to disappoint, and that was certainly the case with Nashua High School North vs. South girls tennis on Tuesday.
The Titans came away with a hard fought win, and it wasn’t the only all local girls tennis match on the docket.
There were other big wins as well, including Nashua South and Bishop Guertin baseball. It was a record-setting day for Milford lacrosse player Kelci Waters, but albeit in defeat.
Here are the details of a sun-splashed Tuesday:
GIRLS TENNIS
NASHUA NORTH 5, NASHUA SOUTH 4
The deciding match ended up being No. 3 doubles, as the Titan tandem of Brielle Bater and Ishanvi Sharma, who also won their singles matches at Nos. 5 and 6, came through with an 8-5 win in doubles.
North had won four of the six singles matches, with Mary Pappas at No. 1 (8-5), Patricia Rodrigues at No. 4 (8-4), Baxter (8-3 and Sharma (8-0).
South got singles wins by Maggie Wagner at No. 2 (8-2) and Samitha Nadella at No. 3 (8-5), and then Nishi Matta/Wagner (8-2) and Nadella/Krina Dani (8-6) came through at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.
North improves to 4-6 and is at Merrimack today, while South is now 2-7 and hosts Manchester Central.
BISHOP GUERTIN 6, MERRIMACK 3
It was a good battle with the Cardinals taking four of six singles and two of three doubles.
Guertin winners were Jasmine Shattuck at No.2 (8-2), Sofia Zielinski at No. 4 (8-1), Jaclyn Kriscunas at No. 5 (8-0) and Lydia Miller at No. 6 (8-1).
Zielinski/Jill Scanlon (9-8, 7-4 tiebreaker), and Kriscunas/Miller (8-2) got the Cards the points they needed, while Merrimack’s Katie Costa/Emily Winefield (9-8, 9-7) won a battle at No. 1 doubles.
Costa got a default win at No. 1 singles while Jess Harden got Merrimack’s other win at No. 3 singles, 8-6.
Now 3-8, Merrimack hosts Nashua North today while the Cards (5-5) host Derryfield.
BEDFORD 8, ALVIRNE 1
The Broncos’ five match winning streak came to an end as they managed just one singles win, by No. 4 Emma Coppi, 9-8 (10-8), a terrific match.
Alvirne had contested losses at No. 2 as Kenzie Legg fell 8-6 and Avery Baker 9-7 at No. 3.
Alvirne hosts Dover today.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 7, PEMBROKE 2
The Cavs halted a four-match skid as they swept doubles after taking four of six singles
Singles winners were No. 1 Keira Sart (8-1), No. 2 Anuhya Chilakapati (8-2), No. 3 Annalise Walle (8-2) and No. 4 Liya Liju (8-6).
In the double sweep, Swart/Chilakapati (8-0), Walle/Liju (8-4) and Irsesha Sidhu/Ava Porto (8-5) all played well.
HB hosts Souhegan today.
BOYS TENNIS
PORTSMOUTH 8, SOUHEGAN 1
Connor Firmin got the Sabers’ lone point with an 8-4 win at No. 2 singles.
Now 4-5, Souhegan is at Goffstown on Thursday.
BASEBALL
NASHUA SOUTH 11, MERRIMACK 1 (5 innings)
Nick Shaw continued his good season allowing just one run on four hits, while Hunter Ward went 2 for 3 with six RBIs.
Gran McCubrey went 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases for the 7-5 Panthers, who stopped a two-game skid.
Merrimack fell to 2-10 and is at Winnacunnet on Thursday, while South will take on Bishop Guertin Friday night at Holman Stadium.
BISHOP GUERTIN 3, WINNACUNNET 1
Owen Richmond checked the Warriors on one run on four hits over 4.1 innings while striking out five as the Cards improved to 9-4 with their third straight win.
Sam Franco picked up the save, while BG was led offensively by Issac Crivac (3 for 3, two RBIs), Jordy Delude (hit, two runs) and Joe Riney (hit, run, RBI).
The Cards are at Pinkerton today in a game that was originally 4:30 but will now be played at 4 p.m.
COE-BROWN 6, MILFORD 4
The Spartans lost a late lead and fell to x-x.
Landon Pierce went 2 for4 with an RBI to lead the Milford offense, while Logan Howard had a triple, two runs and two stolen bases.
Milford is at Bow today.
SOFTBALL
SALEM 5, MERRIMACK 1
The Tomahawks fell to x-x as they managed just a run scored by Lily Dionne (1 for 3) on a fielders choice off the bat of Rachel Flett.
Avery Hui went 2 for 3 with a double for Merrimack, which fell to 5-5 and hosts Nashua South today.
GIRLS LACROSSE
CONCORD CHRISTIAN 23, MILFORD 9
Waters broke her own school record of 40 goals for a season as her seven goals in this one gave her 47 on the year and 93 for her career with eight games left.
Bailey Johnson had the other two goals for Milford, hoping to snap a three-game losing streak when it hosts Campbell today. Concord Christian is 7-1.
