HS Roundup: Novak shines for North; BG lax gets split

It wasn’t exactly a chock full Saturday in the area but if you headed north to Northwood, you saw some pretty good track and field performances from locals at the Black Bear Invitational.

And if you stayed local and hung around Stellos Stadium, you saw the Bishop Guertin boys and girls lacrosse teams go up against some top out of state competition.

Here’s all the details:

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK

LOCALS EXCEL AT BLACK BEAR INVITATIONAL

Top track athletes from all over the state competed at Coe Brown, and here are some local highlights.

First, in the girls meet, Nashua North’s Mardy Novak was a double winner. She captured the discus (118-4.25) and javelin (125-5) and was third in the shot put. Fellow Titan Jhanelle Thomas was second in the 200 and third in the 100, and part of the Titan 4×100 team that was second as well as the 4×400 team that was also second.

Titan Christina Juris was fourth and Allison Frye fifth in the 300 hurdles. North’s Kelechie Okori was fourth in the high jump.

In the girls meet, Nashua South’s Soraya Ross captured the 100 meter dash in 12.48 seconds, and the 4×100 relay team she finished was also first (49.16).

Nashua South’s 4×800 team was third.

South’s Iyana Braswell, as well as being on the 4×100 team, captured the long jump at 17-9.25.

Merrimack’s Kailey Dillon took second in the long jump and third in the 100 hurdles.

Bishop Guertin’s Anna Fondakowski was sixth in the 3200. Alvirne’s Petrini Ofori was sixth in the 300 hurdles and the Broncos were fourth in the 4×800.

In the boys meet, Nashua South’s Rory Olsen won the 300 hurdles (40.20), while Nashua North’s Toby Brown, Jr. captured the shot put (54-1.25.). North’s Darius Smith was second.

Souhegan’s Owen Stine was second in the 1600 meter run (seeded), while fellow Saber Cole Henderson was second in the 110 hurdles, as was the Saber 4×800 relay team headed by Stine.

Alvirne’s Nick Marcotte took third in the 1600, as did Shawn Boudreau in the discus. Fellow Bronco Colin Fay was second in the long jump.

Bishop Guertin’s Matt Giardina was fifth in the 3200. The Cards 4×100 relay team was second and Spencer Matarazzo was third in the javelin.

Tyler Safstrom for Merrimack was sixth in the 800. Milford’s Adam Holodowski was third in the 300 hurdles as was Keegan Hatch in the shot put.

BOYS LACROSSE

ARCHBISHOP STEPINAC 13, BISHOP GUERTIN 10

The Cards made this one interesting against a nationally ranked opponent, as they trailed 13-4 going into the final period.

Guertin goal scorers included Tim Kiely, (two) Connor Guibord, Caleb Yeung (two), Brady Dumont (two), Alex Dumont, and Connor Bouvier.

The Cards will take on Nashua South Monday at 6 p.m. at Stellos.

BISHOP GUERTIN 10, MOSES BROWN 8

The Cards, after a tough stretch, captured their second in a row to improve to 4-3. Arianna Kouchalakos put BG up by four in the first half. Guertin increased the lead to 9-4 in the second and held on for the win.

Lauren Redfern led BG with four goals and an assist while Anna Campel had three goals and an assist. Tess Prunier added a goal and an assist and Kyra O’Connell had a goal.

Besides her goal, Kouchalakos led the Cards with five draw controls while Tess Prunier had four, Maddy Hartsock two and Abby Lynn one.

BG takes on Nashua South Saturday at 4 p.m. at Stellos.
