HUDSON – They always say it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
But sometimes, the start really is the finish, and that certainly was the case in Tuesday’s 6-0 Bishop Guertin High School girls hockey win over Concord at Cyclones Arena.
The Cards jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three goals in just over a two-minute span midway through the first period, added one more before the intermission and the Crimson Tide never recovered.
“We’ve been trying to focus on most of the season coming out strong, ready to go,” BG coach Phil DeVita said, his team now 12-3-2 with still a shot at the top seed. “Setting the tone, setting the pace. We did that today and good things happened from there.”
The Crimson Tide are now slouch, having won 10 in a row at one point and finished the regular season at 13-5.
“Set the tone,” Concord coach Tim Herbert said the first few minutes did. “It was a tough game to go 4-0 in the first. To let them only have one goal for a period afterward kind of reflects the competition it should have been. Unfortunately, we did not show up in the first and they capitalized on it.”
Jenna Lynch had a breakaway goal at 8:03 of the first, and that was followed up by a goal by Riley Goldthwaite just over a minute later, assisted by Grace Menicci and Haley Gagne.
Jasmine Shattuck poked home the puck a minute later literally lying on the ice with Concord’s Julia Kirrane on top of her for a 3-0 lead, and Menicci provided her second of three assists.
“It felt pretty good today,” Shattuck said. “I saw that (puck) and said ‘I’ve got to get it, it’s right there’ and went for it.”
Finally in the period, Lynch made it 4-0 at 13:17, assisted by Menicci and Goldthwaite.
The other story of the day was Shattuck, a junior who had a hat trick and is figuring in the offense for just about every game.
“It’s great to know this team is going to be carried by some really good juniors and underclassmen this year,” said Lynch, who will be watching from afar from Western New England. “Especially Jasmine and Grace Menicci, they’ve really stepped up. It’s been good to see more scoring because it’s going to benefit our team in the long run.”
No doubt the presence of another steady scorer like Shattuck will make teams worry about more than just Lynch’s top line.
“Jasmine’s a great kid, a great team player,” DeVita said. “She had an injury at the beginning of her freshman year but the potential was always there with Jazz and she’s worked really hard on on her skating and shooting. She’s an up and coming leader we feed off of her.”
She got two more goals in the third period to put the game away after a surprisingly scoreless second, with Jill Scanlon assisting on both.
The Cards also got good goaltending out of Scar Casey (15 saves), who was tested almost immediately when she stoned Concord’s Annabelle Norwalt on a breakaway attempt a minute or so into the contest.
The Cards have always hoped to be playing their best hockey going into the tourney, and they may be doing just that with two straight wins after going winless (tie, loss) in their previous two.
“As we go in, we focused on ramping up as the season goes along knowing the end of the season sets the tone for moving forward in the playoffs,” DeVita said. “We really worked hard, working on pace, setting the tone, hopefully we feel good.”
