No surprise as South’s Fernandez takes a Division I title

Anthony Fernandez had plenty of high school wrestling fans’ attention all season.

On Saturday, he showed why, in winnng the 182-pound Division I championshp for Nashua High School South to highlight the local day in the Divison I state meet at Londonderry High School.

Fernandez, the top seed, beat No. 2 Joe Bernard of Exter in an 8-2 sdecision in the finals. Earlier he pinned Windham’s Liam Shambo in the semis in 1:26 and also pinned Bedford’s Tucker Watson in the quarters.

Salem rolled to the title with 256 points, well ahead of Timberlane (173) and host Londonderry (161.5).

South finished eighth at 117, while Nashua North was 12th with 26.5 points.

South’s Colby Vancellette reached the finals at 285, but fell to Keene’s Jason Canavan, the fifth seed, 7-3 in the title match.

The Panthers got a third from Connor Whitman at 160, fourths from Connor Comeau at 220 and Damien Perez at 145, and two sixths: Eddie Reyes at 170 and Toby Brackett at 195.

North only managed a sixth from Carder Tillman at 152. He went 3-3 on the day, with his wins over Manchester’s Landon Murphy, Bedford’s Sam Cowette and Keene’s Damon Greer. But he fell to Noah Afonso of Windham 9-1 in the battle for fifth.

DIVISION III

SOUHEGAN FIFTH, CAMPBELL 12th

While Plymouth captured the state title with 163 points, beating out Bow (125.5), the Sabers managed a fifth place with 87 points, just behind fourth place Pelham (99) but ahead of sixth place Lebanon (70).

Souhegan got a division title from Logan Brown at 132, as the No. 2 seed pinned Tegan Lightfoot of ConVal at 2:41 in the finals. Noah Denis at 138 had a crack at the title, but did get a second as the third seed lost by fall (2:22) to No. 1 seed Henry Osmer of Winnisquam.

Second seed Chase Knuckles also finished second, bowing to fourth-seeded Luke Diamond of Plymouth in a tight 7-5 decision in the 126-pound finals

Christian Knuckles took third at 152.

Despite their low finish, Campbell got a state champion in Logan Allaire at 152, as the top seed bested Bow’s No. 2 Ben McDowell in a 50-second pin. Allaire also made quick work of No. 4 Asa Michetti of Mascoma Valley (50 seconds) and even quicker work of Winnisquam’s Colby Chase (21 seconds) in the quarters.

Campbell also got a fourth from Chris Corbett at 138.
