DERRY — When a team is on a winning streak, it can seem everything goes their way.

Entering their Division III girls volleyball semifinal match against the Campbell Cougars on Thursday night at Pinkerton Academy, the Oyster River Bobcats had won their last 12 matches, sweeping their last four in straight sets. And unfortunately for the Cougars, they could not break those streaks as they became the Bobcats latest victim, falling 3-0 to end their season.

Number one seed Oyster River (17-1) now heads to the championship on Saturday here to face No. 2 Coe-Brown Northwood at 2 p.m.

Last night the Bobcats came out on the attack right from the opening serve. Scoring eight straight point to go up 9-1 before Campbell called their first timeout.

“They were a really solid team,” said Campbell coach Melissa Miner. “I had expected them to come out hard and strong.

To get her team back into the game,Miner told her team not to focus on the score, knowing that they could build some momentum if they got their serve back.

Despite pep talk, the Cougars struggled to find their rhythm, making several unforced errors. The Bobcats breezed through the first set, winning 25-6.

The Cougars showed some fight in the second set, grabbing the early 7-2 lead before Oyster River called their first time out of the night. The Bobcats would creep back and eventually regain the lead. 24-18, it looked like another it was going to be another easy win.

Desperate to not drop another set, Campbell rallied for seven straight point to go up 25-24 with a chance to steal a set. Natalie Cloutier led the charge for Campbell with multiple spikes that kept the rally going. She led the team with eight kills. Even though the Bobcat showed some cracks with a few mistakes, they came back to score the last three point and win the second set 27-25.

“We played better collectively in that second set,” said Miner. “And we finally we able to make some kills.”

After playing a set that featured five lead changes, Oyster River slowly but surely built a 14-7 lead in the third set before Campbell called timeout. They got the score as close as 14-9, but the Bobcats kept them at arm’s length the entire way, taking the final set 25-15.

Even though her 13-4 team fell short, Miner realized they “played their hearts out and I could not have asked for anything more.”

Libero Leann Ramos stood out on defense, leading Campbell with seven digs.
