The curtain is almost closing for some teams on the 2022 football season.
And some are looking to avoid injury because they will be playing playoff football in a week – or two.
Which ones? Right now, the post season becksons for Nashua North, Bishop Guertin and Merrimack in Division I; Souhegan and Milford in Division II and Campbell in Divsion III.
Here’s what’s involved in this last week for some locals of the regular season:
TONIGHT
DIVISION I
GOFFSTOWN (0-8) at NASHUA SOUTH (1-7)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Stellos Stadium, Nashua.
LAST WEEK: Merrimack 44, Goffstown 7; Memorial 28, South 27.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: Who thought at the beginning of the year this would be a game between two teams with one win between them? But the struggle has been real as both are playing loads of young players. But South does have a senior QB in Karsten Lemire and he can make the difference.
PREDICTION: South 37, Goffstown 7.
NASHUA NORTH (8-0) at DOVER (4-4)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Dover’s Dunaway Field.
LAST WEEK: Nashua North 35, Bishop Guertin 28; Timberlane 48, Dover 42 (OT)
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Titans have a first round bye secured, so there’s always the threat of a letdown for Derek Finlay, Jack Peters, & Co. But the Titans also would love to finish unbeaten. But Dover QB Ryan Aubin may have something to say about that, as he threw for 425 yards and five TDs. Dover will want this to help secure a playoff berth as well.
Of not, Toby Brown, Jr. (knee) most likely won’t play in this game. There is hope that – unofficial word – he can come back in the latter part of the playoffs for the Titans.
PREDICTION: North 30, Dover 28.
MERRIMACK (5-2, 5-3 overall) at BEDFORD (5-2, 6-2 overall)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: BHS Bulldog Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Merrimack 44, Goffstown 7; Bedford 41, Keene 0.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: Both teams are in the playoffs, so what’s at stake? Likely trying to secure home field. Merrimack’s high powered offense, led by Reimello Hyde, will be a challenge for Bedford’s top-notch defense.
PREDICTION: Merrimack 21, Bedford 13.
MANCHESTER CENTRAL (1-6) at ALVIRNE (0-8)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Alvirne High School, Hudson.
LAST WEEK: Salem 45, Alvirne 12; Pinkerton 38, Central 14.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The toughest Bronco season, emotionally and on the field, will likely come to an end unless they schedule the extra week. Central’s only win was over Dover, allowing just 14 points. It was the only game the Little Green didn’t allow as much as 35 points.
PREDICTION: Central 35, Alvirne 12.
DIVISION II
KENNETT (5-3) at HOLLIS BROOKLINE (1-7)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: HB High School Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Kennett 28, Merrimack Valley 21; Manchester West 21, Hollis Brookline 6.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Eagles may need this game to clinch a playoff spot, while the Cavaliers would love to ruin those plans led by Adam York and Brady Laub. Might be tough, though.
PREDICTION: Kennett 35, HB 6.
MILFORD (4-4) at LEBANON (0-8)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Lebanon High School
LAST WEEK: Milford 42, Hillsboro-Deering/Hopkinton 22; John Stark 50, Lebanon 0.
LAST YEAR: Lebanon 27, Milford 14 (regular season); Milford 21, Lebanon 14 (Division II semis).
FYI: Ah, the Spartans return to the scene of one of their grittiest wins, a signature semifinal victory last November. And one that marked the end of Lebanon’s tenure as a competitive football team, because a new coaching staff and a bare cupboard have the Raiders fielding a non-competitive team. The Spartans want to clinch a playoff berth and likely do so with a win.
SATURDAY
DIVISION I
KEENE (1-7) at BISHOP GUERTIN (6-2)
WHEN: 6 p.m.
WHERE: Stellos Stadium.
LAST WEEK: North 35, Bishop Guertn 28; Bedford 41, Keene 0.
LAST YEAR: Bishop Guertin 34, Keene 13.
FYI: The Cards have to be still stinging from losing a touchdown lead vs. North with just over two minutes to play last Friday. This should help make them feel better; the Blackbirds have lost seven straight, outscored by a total of 268-88. Ouch. This game likely won’t help that total, but the one thing the Cards will want to do is avoid injury. They want the win to pretty much secure home field in the first round of the playoffs.
DIVISION II
SOUHEGAN (7-1) at JOHN STARK (4-4)
WHEN: 2 p.m.
WHERE: John Stark in Weare.
LAST WEEK: Pelham 28, Souhegan 21; John Stark 50, Lebanon 0.
LAST YEAR: Souhegan 44, John Stark 8
FYI: The Sabers can do their rivals, Milford, a favor with a win just in case the unlikely event the Spartans get shocked on Friday night at Lebanon. You can bet Souhegan and sophomore QB Romy Jain will be bouncing back with a lot more points than the 21 they got in their loss to Pelham last Friday.
PREDICTION: Souhegan 48, John Stark 14.
DIVISION III
FALL MOUNTAIN (4-4) at CAMPBELL (6-2)
WHEN: 12 p.m.
WHERE: CHS in Litchfield.
LAST WEEK: Campbell 45, Kearsarge 6; Trinity 37, Fall Mountain 0.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: Fall Mountain looked like a playoff team at the end of September with a 4-1 record. However, they’ve gone 0 for October (Inter-Lakes and Stevens their other losses). It looks like the Cougars are cemented into the third spot and a semifinal trip to Monadnock next week, but would be nice to finish 7-2. Right now it looks like Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough will be the fourth playoff team in this division.
