HS Tourney Roundup: Cavs advance; BG, Milford ousted

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 27, 2022

The goal for the Hollis Brookline Cavaliers boys soccer team under new coach Pedro Zampilli was to go further in the Division II tournament than in past years.

They took a great step with a win in the first round on Wednesday on a late goal, but their rival Milford didn’t get match that, bowing out.

Meanwhile, Bishop Guertin fell to Manchester Central in the first round of the Divison I tournament at Gill Stadium in Manchester. Still, the Cards had one of their best seasons in recent memory, finishing 8-8-1 under first year head coach Tyler VanDeventer.

“Going to continue to build,” VanDeventer said.

One scheduled game was moved to today due to the weather, as No. 2 Campbell will host No. 15 Hopkinton in the Division III boys soccer prelims today at 3 p.m

Here are Wednesday’s local boys soccer tourney results:

DIVISION I PRELIMS

NO. 6 MANCHESTER CENTRAL 3, NO.11 BISHOP GUERTIN 1

Rayaan Hameed scored his 19th goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to keep the Cardinals’ season going.

As a result, a potential all-local quarterfinal matchup won’t happen as it will be Central (12-4-1) who will now head to Stellos Stadium Sunday to face Nashua North at 1 p.m.

DIVISION II

NO. 5 HOLLIS BROOKLINE 1, NO. 12 TRINITY 0

The host Cavaliers’ Jesse Gertz got the only goal of the game on a rebound off a Ben Dufoe shot that caromed off the left post right to Gertz in the game’s final minute.

HB put a lot of chances on net earlier but were stymied by the Pioneers. They now will head to face No. 4 Lebanon in Sunday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m.

NO. 6 COE-BROWN 2, NO. 11 MILFORD 1

Milford led 1-0 on an Avery Wilson goal n the first half, but a handball/red card resulted in a Coe-Brown penalty kick to tie it, and the hosts got the game-winner 10 minutes into the second half to end the Spartans’ season at 6-11.

“We battled down a man for 50 minutes, challenging and defending well as a unit,” Milford coach Anson Thibault said. “Disappointing to lose, but we fought well throughout the game.”

TODAY’S GAMES

While Campbell has the lone soccer game, the No. 4 Cougars will also host No. 13 Laconia in the Divison II girls volleyball tourney prelims at 6 p.m. Also, No. 9 Milford will visit No. 8 Kingswood.

In Division I volleyball, there are three quarterfinals involving locals:

No. 5 Nashua North will visit No. 4 Exeter at 6 p.m., while at 4 p.m. No. 2 Hollis Brookline will host No. 7 Portsmouth in the quarterfinals. Also, No. 8 Bishop Guertin will travel to face No. 1, unbeaten Bedford at 6 p.m.
