FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Cards, Sabers go big game hunting

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 7, 2022

Bishop Guertin's Matt Santosuosso hopes to enjoy a few long TD runs like this one last Saturday vs. Winacunnet when the Cards head to Londonderry tonight for a huge Division I showdown. (Telegraph photo by TOM KING)

Friday is a night to go big game hunting, and locally you have a choice: head to Souhegan for a battle of Division II 5-0 teams, the Sabers and Hanover. Or you can go to Londonderry for Bishop Guertin vs. the Lancers, two teams that have yet to lose in Division I.

Here’s a look at those plus all the other local games. A reminder that Nashua North at Alvirne is now Sunday at 1 p.m.

FRIDAY

DIVISION I

BISHOP GUERTIN (5-0) at LONONDERRY (4-0, 4-1 overall)

WHEN: Tonight, 7 p.m.

WHERE: LHS Sawyer Field

LAST WEEK: Bishop Guertin 31, Winnacunnet 7; Londonderry 48, Manchester Central 6.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Cards are banged up going into this one, the first of three tough tests in a row, although it’s said that running back/linebacker Charlie Bellavance will be returning. They are thin at the linebacker spot, but if Bellavance can also play running back, it takes some pressure off Matt Santosuosso. The Lancers, meanwhile, are mowing opponents down, led by QB Drew Heenan. BG will no doubt be aware of Lancer kick returner Anthony Amaro. The defending champs are a very good team.

PREDICTION: Londonderry 26, Bishop Guertin 21. Banged up Cards take stock for later.

NASHUA SOUTH (0-5) at CONCORD (3-1, 4-1 overall)

WHEN: Tonight at 7.

WHERE: Concord’s Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Bedford 48, Nashua South 0; Concord 49, Rutlant (Vt.) 6.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Tide have a dynamic back in Elia Bahuma, whom no doubt the Panthers will key on defensively, but they have others, too such as Peyton Enis Yearout and Austin Wells. South has given up 95 points over the last two weeks, with some youth in key spots. Offensively, South has struggled as well, shut out two weeks in a row and last week had less than five first downs. Tough stretch.

PREDICTION: Concord 35, South 12.

SPAULDING (3-1, 4-1 overall) AT MERRIMACK (3-1, 4-1 overall).

WHEN: Tonight at 6:30.

WHERE: MHS Student Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Manchester Memorial 27, Spaulding 26: Merrimack 34, Keene 7

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: Both teams will be fighting for a playoff spot, to get into that field of 13. The Red Raiders are the fall’s biggest surprise, with junior QB Kaiden Melendez and Zach Lynch are keys and Spaulding can run the football – the Raiders averaged 250 yards on the round the first two weeks. So can Merrimack, led by Reimello Hyde, one of the best two-way players around. Trent Jackson is a quick strike QB.

PREDICTION: Merrimack 30, Spaulding 28. Home field helps ‘Hawks.

DIVISION II

HANOVER (5-0) at SOUHEGAN (5-0)

WHEN: Tonight at 7.

WHERE: SHS Saber Field.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 46, Plymouth 0; Hanover 59, Lebanon 0.

LAST YEAR: Souhegan 27, Hanover 20.

FYI: You want a big game, you’ve got one. The Sabers are blowing away the opposition, led by QB Romy Jain and back J.J. Bright, plus a host of other receivers, etc. Their win over Plymouth – the ease of it – was a shock. Hanover has been steady; Jaysen Oriol is a breakaway threat. Defensively, Souhegan has given up 34 points, but all in blowouts; Hanover has allowed 39.

PREDICTION: Souhegan 42, Hanover 21. Sabers are tough to slow down, the Fastest Show on Turf.

MILFORD (2-3) at HOLLIS BROOKLINE (1-4)

WHEN: Tonight at 7.

WHERE: Hollis Brookline HS.

LAST WEEK: Milford 51, Manchester West 21; John Stark 42, Milford 12.

LAST YEAR: Milford 38, Hollis Brookline 14.

FYI: Big one for the Charles Urda-led Spartans as they try to claw back to .500; they may have played their best game of the year last week at Manchester West. The Cavs, on the other hand, are just trying to survive, surprisingly falling at home decisively to Stark. Spartans coach Keith Jones, out last week due to an illness, is expected back.

PREDICTION: Milford 42, Hollis Brookline 12. Cavs play well early, Milford does same late.

SATURDAY

DIVSION III

MONADNOCK (4-1) at CAMPBELL (4-1)

WHEN: Saturday, 11 a.m.

WHERE: Campbell HS.

LAST WEEK: Trinity 36, Campbell 22; Monadnock 63, ConVal 8.

LAST YEAR: Campbell 18, Monadnock 0.

FYI: Right now, you’d have to think this game, a great Division III rivalry, is for home field advantage in the semifinals, as they both lost to Trinity (although 4-1 Fall Mountain may also have something to say about this). What Campbell does is no secret, as they feed Scott Hershberger the ball and let him pile up the yards. Monadnock also feeds back Ethan Brown (five TDs last week) and Jack Lorenz, who is a very good blocker. This should be a good one.

PREDICTION: Campbell 15, Monadnock 13. Really, too close to call, so we go with the home team.

SUNDAY

DIVISION I

NASHUA NORTH (5-0) at ALVIRNE (0-5)

WHEN: Sunday, 1 p.m.

WHERE: Alvirne HS.

LAST WEEK: Nashua North 64, Goffstown 14; Windham 52, Alvirne 0.

LAST YEAR: Nashua North 25, Alvirne 13.

FYI: It will be an unpredictable atmosphere as emotions will be a factor on the Bronco side, playing with the memory of one of their players, Gavin Huntoon, tragically killed in a dirt bike accident last weekend. It’s been a tough season already for the Broncos, who had just 24 players at the end of the Windham loss. North’s Derek Finlay-led talent should control things, but there’ll be a lot going on here.

PREDICTION: Nashua North 40, Alvirne 12.
