The season got tougher all of a sudden for a couple of local teams, but brighter for another on Friday night.
First, Nashua South’s struggles continued as the Panthers were blanked at Bedford. In Division II, Hollis Brookline also surprisingly fell by 30 to John Stark at home, but Milford managed to play perhaps its best game of the season in a 30-point win at Manchester West.
However, the Spartans were without their head coach, Keith Jones, who was hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment.
Here’s a look:
BEDFORD 48, NASHUA SOUTH 0
The Panthers fell to 0-5 and trailed the Bulldogs 41-0 at the half.
South hurt itself at times, throwing three interceptions and allowing a scoop and score on a screen pass play.
The Panthers have now been outscored 95-0 the last two weeks, and have to travel next Friday to face a tough Concord team.
“We managed to play worse than last week (a loss to North),” Panthers coach Scott Knight said. “We managed less than five first downs all night, and really struggled badly on offense.”
But that’s been the norm for teams that face Bedford. The Bulldogs, since losing to North in the opener, have outscored the opposition 130-10 to improve to 4-1.
MILFORD 51, MANCHESTER WEST 21
Chris Kotsifas scored four TDs and Charles Urda picked off four Blue Knight passes as the Spartans snapped a three-game skid, improving to 2-3.
Cade Cloutier two TDs, Trice Cote had a TD reception from Urda and
Colton Tewksbury also had an interception. Kotsifas and Eli Tekola also played well at linebacker.
It was 14-13 after one quarter but the Spartans scored three times in the second quarter to take control at the half, 34-14.
Milford assistant coach Rick Urda took over as the interim head coach in Jones’ absence. Jones, according to sources, is expected back next week.
This game was much different for Milford than the previous three losses.
“We were definitely more physical up front,” Urda said. “The offensive and defensive lines did a much better job of controlling line of scrimmage. It showed.
“Defensively, we were like a deer in the head lights early, but after that we did a better job tackling. We wrapped people up.”
Milford hosts HB next week, hoping to reach .500.
JOHN STARK 42, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 12
The Cavaliers fell behind 36-6 and the half and couldn’t get any closer as the Generals picked up their first win of the season (1-4).
HB fell to 1-4 on the season, and will be at Milford next Friday.
