Tennis Tourney Roundup: Alvirne, HB lone local winners

And then there were three.

Yes, there are just three high school girls tennis teams still competing, and they’re all in the Division II tournament.

One didn’t play today, top seed, 13-1 Souhegan which had a bye and will play either St. Thomas or Coe-Brown at home in Friday’s quarterfinals.

But the two that did had significant wins. For No. 5 Alvirne, it was the Broncos first tournament win in recent memory. For the No. 11 Cavaliers, their win over Bow was an upset. The two will be in action on Friday along with the Sabers.

Unfortunately for the Division I locals, it was an 0 for 3 day as Nashua South, Nashua North and Bishop Guertin all fell, with just one individual match win among the three.

Today, in boys tennis at 4 p.m., No. 6 Bishop Guerin will at the red-hot No. 3 Nashua South Panthers in the Division I quarterfinals.

Here’s Wednesday’s rundown:

DIVISION II PRELIMS

NO. 5 ALVIRNE 7, NO. 12 KENNETT 2

The Broncos (12-3) fell at the top two singles positions, but recovered to win the next four singles and swept doubles.

Singles winners from Nos. 3 through 6 included Gabby Cummins (8-2), Kenzie Legg (8-2), Lindsay Gasdia (8-1) and Emma Copi (8-0).

Natalie MacSweeney/Avery Baker triumphed at No. 1 doubles 8-1, while Cummins/Legg won 8-4 at No. 2 and Gasdia/Marissa Murphy took No. 3 8-2.

Next up will be a trip to No. 4, 11-3 Goffstown on Friday. The teams did not play each other during the regular season . The Grizzlies losses were to locals Souhegan and Hollis Brookline, plus Oyster River.

NO. 11 HOLLIS BROOKLINE 5, NO. 6 BOW 4

The Cavaliers turned the tables on the 10-5 Falcons, avenging an earlier 5-4 regular season loss. The teams split singles but HB took two of three doubles, with No. 1 Keira Swart/Anuhya Chilakapati winning 8-1 and No. 2 Abby and Mikayla Coolidge pulling out a clinching 8-6 win.

Singles winners for the Cavs (8-7) included No. 1 Swart (8-0), No. 3 Abby Coolidge (9-8), and No. 4 Katie Bauer (8-6).

HB now will head to Durham to face No. 3, 12-2 Oyster River on Friday.

DIVISION I PRELIMS

NO. 7 PINKERTON 9, NO. 10 NASHUA SOUTH 0

The Panthers season comes to an end, although after the start they had to the season making the tournament was almost unimaginable a month ago.

The closest matches were in doubles, when Margaret Wagner/Abby Finchum and Krisha Dani/Jenna Lecklider both lost 8-3 at Nos. 1 and 2.

South winds up 6-9 while the Astros move on to face No. 2 Dover in the quarters.

NO. 6 HANOVER 9, NO. 11 NASHUA NORTH 0

The Titans finish up at 6-9, and like their cross town rivals South the closest matches were 8-3, with Ashley Goh falling at No. 2 and Goh/Mary Pappas bowing 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Hanover moves on to face No. 3 Bedford on Friday.

NO. 5 EXETER 8, NO. 12 BISHOP GUERTIN 1

The Cardinals wind up the season at 5-10 but got the only local Division I individual match win of the day as BG’s Abbey Linskey won her match 8-3.

Exeter will now face No. 4 Manchester Central in the quarters.
